Paramount has preemptively bought an untitled contemporary love story pitch by writer Marc Klein as a starring vehicle for Tom Cruise and set it up with Paramount-based Cruise/Wagner, says Variety.
“We believe Marc Klein has come up with an original and very moving love story,” Cruise/Wagner executive Don Granger told the trade.
Cruise last appeared in War of the Worlds and stars in Mission: Impossible: III, opening on May 5. He hasn’t yet set his next acting gig.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Tom Cruise led a poll of movie exhibitors aimed at determining the top 10 moneymaking stars of 2005.
Cruise, who appeared in last year’s War of the Worlds, has won the annual survey by Quigley Publishing Co. seven times, Arnold Robinson, the actor’s publicist, said Thursday. Tom Hanks, Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds and Bing Crosby have all snatched the No. 1 spot five times.
The Quigley Poll, conducted every year since 1932, asks motion picture exhibitors to vote for the 10 stars who generated the most box-office revenue for their theatres.
Johnny Depp finished second in the 2005 poll. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt tied for third, followed by Vince Vaughn, George Clooney, Will Smith, Reese Witherspoon, Adam Sandler and last year’s winner Tom Hanks.

Tom saves Yahoo demo
News.com reports:
Yahoo Chief Executive Terry Semel’s glitch-riddled keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show on Friday was saved by Tom Cruise and Ellen DeGeneres–and by making Microsoft Windows the butt of jokes.
While trying to demonstrate the new Yahoo Go TV, which allows people to access Yahoo content and services through a Windows XP-based PC connected to a TV, the Internet connection failed. Executives tried to ad lib until Semel called his surprise guest, Cruise, to the stage.
Cruise, twirling sun glasses in his hand, told the audience he was there to help his old friend Semel before showing a trailer of his new movie, “Mission Impossible III,” which is due in U.S. theaters in May.
Afterward, Cruise, Semel, Marco Boerries, Yahoo’s senior vice president of Connected Life, and Dan Rosensweig, the company’s chief operating officer, milled about the stage awkwardly, patting each other on the back.
A man in the audience yelled, “Play it again,” and Cruise said he wanted to see how fast Yahoo’s system could replay the movie. “Press the button,” he said, and Cruise could once again be seen in the action-adventure film dodging blasts and kissing women.
After Cruise left the stage, Semel said, “I guess if you’re going to have a demo glitch, (there is no) better way to follow it up than with Tom Cruise.”

Hello! Magazine:
Couple-of-the-moment Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes enjoyed an enthusiastic reception when they appeared in glitzy Las Vegas at an electronics industry event that drew a roll call of major entertainment names.
Hand-in-hand and flashing their trademark big smiles/big shades, the Mission Impossible star and his pregnant fiancée joined an eclectic line-up of performers including Justin Timberlake, Robert Redford, Alicia Keys, Nicole Richie and Morgan Freeman.
Gadget fan Tom and his fellow actors took full advantage of their time at the International Consumer Electronics fair, checking out the huge range of digital devices and technological goodies on display at the event, which was presided over by Bill Gates.
Although perhaps not the kind of environment where we’re used to seeing top entertainers, new technology such as 3G services on mobile phones offers unparalleled opportunities for distributing music and movies in fresh, portable formats – hence the participation of savvy stars such as Top Gun Tom.
