Extra TV interviewed Tom
Before jetting off to Monday’s big premiere, Tom opened up to “Extra” about his real-life “Mission: Impossible” — giving those pesky paparazzi the slip to get Katie and Suri safely home from the hospital.
“You think I’m going to let anybody mess with my girls? Come on, man, I make ‘Mission Impossible’ movies,” Tom laughed. “Think I can’t get in and out of a hospital in my town? I mean, it’s just not going to happen.”
Tom told us that even his screen alter ego, secret agent Ethan Hunt, would have been proud of the stealth operation. “There was no paparazzi there, and when we left we got in our house,” he revealed. “It’s been really calm, actually.”
“Extra” was among the first to congratulate the superstar dad. We surprised him with a gift basket full of baby goodies for Suri. And Tom revealed a curious romantic secret that only he and Katie had shared: “Suri was born exactly one year to the day that I met Katie for the first time.”
Meanwhile, Tom’s still walking on air after the birth and reminiscing about the first time he held Baby Suri. “I keep replaying it over and over in my mind,” he admitted. “You never forget that moment of holding your child for the first time. It’s powerful because of how much I love Kate.”
As for Tom’s other big arrival, “Mission: Impossible III,” he revealed that it almost didn’t happen. “I wasn’t going to make another one until I felt I could take it to another level,” Tom said.
But Tom went full steam ahead after getting Hollywood’s hottest new director, J.J. Abrams, on board. JJ was more surprised than anyone. “I thought I was being ‘Punk’d',” he confessed.
You can see the spectacular results of their teamwork, when “Mission: Impossible III” hits theaters on May 5 and a video and slide show at Extra’s site, click here.
Lots of sites report about Tom’s unannounced visit in Rome for the promotion of his new movie. I’ll give a summary of the articles.
Hundreds of fans turned out as Tom Cruise jetted in and out of Rome Monday for the afternoon premiere of Mission: Impossible III.

Tom Cruise showed up unannounced in the middle of a news conference in Rome promoting the premiere of Mission Impossible III, surprising his co-stars and the media – just three days after fiancee Katie Holmes gave birth to their daughter Suri. A leather-jacket clad Cruise made a grand entrance at the press event Monday, bounding onstage to wild cheers while costar Philip Seymour Hoffman was talking to reporters. “Sorry to interrupt,” he said. “I just got off an airplane, so I’m way too tired.”
He also took part in a press conference – but the film took a back seat to questions about his baby.
Cruise walked in from the back of the room and began hugging his fellow actors. It’s the first time Cruise has been seen in public since the birth of his daughter, Suri, last week. The premiere of the movie was scheduled later that night.
Cruise said he wasn’t planning on coming to Rome, but Katie told him to do it. She had persuaded him to keep touring Europe to promote his new film, “Mission: Impossible III. “My mission impossible was to be here today,” the 43-year-old actor told reporters. “You know, I have my daughter, newborn, and, you know, I don’t want to leave her, you know, Kate. And I wasn’t going to come and then Kate said, you know, ‘Go go, you got the whole cast, the world premiere here. Go have fun’. So I’m here.”
Cruise said he’d stay for eight hours, attend the premiere and then return home. “I’m going to be here for a few hours and then I’m going to get on a plane and go back to Katie and Suri,” Cruise said. Then Tom told Reuters on the red carpet at the film’s world premiere that Holmes and their infant daughter, Suri, were doing so well that he would continue to Paris and London. “I spoke with Katie and here we discussed it … She said, ‘You know, things change,’” Cruise said. “I realise the fans are going to be there in London and Paris and you know, everything is cool. So we’re going to hit it. We’re going to bang it.”
Once he’s back in the United States following the Wednesday event in Paris, Cruise said he planned to talk to Holmes about marriage plans and decide a date and location for their wedding. “That stuff is actually going to happen in the next couple of weeks. We are going to decide where and when and how,” Cruise said. “Really whatever Kate wants, you know.”
Cast members of “Mission: Impossible III” later delighted thousands of screaming fans by appearing on a podium in the packed square in Rome’s historical center, Piazza del Popolo, where they were interviewed about the movie.
However, the warmest welcome was reserved for Cruise, who caused a wave of near-hysteria when he waved at the public and exclaimed, “Roma! Italy! Italia!” He then climbed down several steps, picked up a white teddy bear someone had tossed in his direction and read the note attached to it.

“This is for Suri, we wish her lots of love and good things. Tom go always like you’re doing now. Kiss to Katie,” Cruise read.
Asked about the birth, he said: “It was everything we wanted it to be and more. It was really very spiritual.”
Cruise said that he didn’t yet know whether Suri looked more like him or his mother, but joked that “she came out” with his haircut. Cruise revealed Suri has a “huge mop of beautiful hair” that looks just like his.
Asked about her name, he said: “In Hebrew it means princess. In Persian, it means red rose. It was the second book we looked at and, all of a sudden, Suri. We looked at each other. Bam!”
Holmes gave birth to the couple’s daughter, Suri, last week and Cruise said they have already gotten a routine down pat. The Hollywood A-lister also suggested that he wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. “I changed her first,” he said. “I change diapers all the time. I actually, I have to tell you, I love it. We have a whole system worked out. It’s the ‘B and B’ – she does the breast feeding and I do the burping and changing the diapers. It’s teamwork, it’s fun.”
He was gushing again about Holmes in Rome, saying childbirth had deepened his love for her. “I look at Kate and my admiration and love and respect for her, although I didn’t think it could get any more, it became more,” Cruise said. “It was very beautiful.”
During the round of movie interviews, the megastar told reporters that the new parents’ first call was to Holmes’ mother and father in the Midwest after baby Suri was born one week ago.
He thanked the public for supporting him and his family.
“I also want to thank you for the warm welcome that you’ve given to my daughter Suri and my fiance Katie, and I just love you all,” Cruise said. “And I hope you enjoy this film because that’s why I do it, I make them for you and I really want to entertain you.”
Cruise proved that love at the movie’s premiere Monday night. He spent two and a half hours on the red carpet, signing autographs, posing for photos and answering reporters’ questions. With him on the red carpet were his adopted daughter Isabella, 13, and adopted son Connor, 11.
“Mission: Impossible III” is an adrenaline-packed two hours of death-dodging that sees the action star leaping from Shanghai skyscrapers and breaking into Vatican City. In Mission: Impossible III, superagent Ethan Hunt (Cruise) takes on an icy villain played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Director J.J. Abrams, creator of TV’s Lost and Alias, has said he aimed to balance action with character interplay in the spirit of the television show on which the Mission: Impossible films are based. Ving Rhames, Michelle Monaghan, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Laurence Fishburne, Keri Russell and Maggie Q also star in the movie, which is scheduled to open May 5 worldwide.

ET again has a video of Tom; from an interview Jann Carl had with him. He talked with her about the blockbuster M:I-III but of course also about his beautiful baby girl Suri:
Proud new papa Tom Cruise is talking to ET all about his blockbuster new ‘Mission: Impossible’ movie — and this week’s arrival of his and fiancée Katie Holmes brand-new baby Suri!
“Suri was born one year to the day exactly that I met Kate,” Tom tells ET’s Jann Carl, clearly punchy from the thrill of his new arrival and from lack of sleep!
“It’s not even just not sleeping because Suri’s up,” he explains. “We’re not sleeping because we’re just staring at her. She has this huge mop of black hair; we have the same haircut! It’s pretty. She’s just so pink, with black hair.”
Tom, who was in the delivery room for Suri’s birth last Tuesday, recounts the miraculous experience of Suri’s arrival: “We’ve been going over it and over it, as you do, just thinking about it, and it happened so quickly, and it’s so personal,” he says. “I’ll tell you what I will share: it’s everything we wanted it to be and more. It was spiritual, it was powerful, it was sublime. To love this woman the way I love this woman, and to have this child, and the family that we have — that’s what it was, really.”
When asked to sum up the last 12 months of his life, Tom finds himself at a loss for words: “Sublime; exciting,” he manages. “Really, there aren’t any words; on so many levels — professionally, artistically, and above all of that, personally — and in every way, with Kate, my whole family, with Suri, the friendship, it’s been extraordinary. I start stammering because every word that I think of is just not really enough. Beautiful. Mom is beautiful. Suri is beautiful. It’s incredible.”
‘Mission: Impossible III,’ Tom’s other proud production, explodes into theaters May 5, and Tom says, “It has this epic action and it’s such a personal story, a love story. Here’s this superspy, and how’s he going to have this relationship with this woman?”
Armed with new cast members, including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Keri Russell, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Laurence Fishburne and “Alias” secret weapon J.J. Abrams at the helm, this ‘Mission’ could prove to be the greatest of them all!

USAToday:
Tom Cruise talks about fatherhood
Tom Cruise has starred in 14 blockbusters over 25 years, and is trying to power another one to the stratosphere. But it’s in the other role he landed recently, he says, where he really feels the pressure: As father of a newborn.
“It’s indescribable,” Cruise tells USA Today. “You hold this newborn, and you realize you’ve got responsibilities like you’ve never had before.”
Cruise, who stars in May 5′s Mission: Impossible III, had been promoting his film worldwide when the arrival of his first child with fiancee Katie Holmes brought everything to a screeching halt Tuesday. Their daughter, Suri, weighed in at 7 pounds, 7 ounces. Her name means “princess” in Hebrew and “red rose” in Persian.
Mother and newborn are doing well, Cruise says. Cruise has two children, Isabella, 13, and Connor, 11, with his second wife, Nicole Kidman.
“I thought I had been used to long days and nights on movie sets,” Cruise said Friday. “But I think I’ve forgotten what sleep is.”
Cruise says he was hesitant to resume doing promotional interviews for the movie, which is directed by J.J. Abrams, the creator of Lost and Alias. “I talked it over with Katie, and she said ‘Go, go, everything’s great,’” Cruise says. “But I don’t want to do anything that keeps me away from home for too long. I just want to be near my family.”
Hollywood.com reports Tom showed off his playful side in his first interview since the birth of his daughter, Suri, when he pretended he had a picture of the baby in his back pocket.
The movie star sat down for an interview with newscaster Deborah Roberts and the rest of the Mission: Impossible 3 cast last week and decided to have a little fun when the prying interviewer attempted to get hold of a first shot of the new baby.
Roberts was thrilled when Cruise reached into his pocket after the interviewer asked if he had a photo of his newborn on her news show 20/20, which aired last night. His castmates also held their breaths as a giggling Cruise presented Roberts with nothing but an empty palm. Roberts says, “It was really funny at first and I really thought that we would get the first peek at this beautiful little baby.”
Not giggling is Nicole Kidman – she is fuming according to NationalLedger:
In what can only be described as an odd declaration Nicole Kidman has stated through her publicist that she never congratulated Tom Cruise or Katie Holmes on the birth of their new little baby Suri.
Uh-okay.
In a report from the UK, Kidman’s publicist Catherine Olin is reportedly fumng and declared, “Ms Kidman never issues statements about her personal life. I’m her publicist and I never released this statement.” She fumes, “I’ve been deluged with press queries on the back of this and I’m completely taken aback.”
Goodness. Wit – isn’t that what PR folks are for? [end of quotes]

The origin of the name Suri
Not everybody recognised the word ‘Suri’ as Hebrew of “princess”.
sfgate.com: Baby Suri’s name can be traced to a Hebrew word meaning “princess” or “noblewoman,” but by such a circuitous route that the connection is lost on most Israelis. Since the birth Tuesday in Los Angeles, bemused Israeli TV and radio presenters have debated the word’s origins. “Nobody here has ever really heard of it,” an announcer on Israel’s Army Radio said during a discussion Thursday. The Yediot Ahronot newspaper agreed in its half-page splash on the celebrity birth. “We seem to have learned a new Hebrew word — and from Tom Cruise, no less,” said a Channel 2 TV anchorman.
So what’s the explaination to all that confusion?
sfgate has the answer: Avshalom Koor, who has for years presented TV and radio spots on the intricacies of Hebrew, said Suri was a derivation of Sarah — the name of Biblical patriarch Abraham’s wife — as pronounced by some Central European Jews.
“Suri is a pet name for Sarah,” Koor told Army Radio. “The Ashkenazi (Jews) of Poland and Hungary pronounce it Suri.”
In the meantime more congratulations has been given, one of them by Chris Klein, Katie’s ex-fiancé. “They look very happy together,” Klein said. “They really do. I wish them all the best.” Very warm words, Chris!
“Desperate Housewives” star James Denton, a husband and father of two, gave Tom some advice on his new bundle of joy: “Hire help. You can afford it!”
Even California’s first lady, Maria Shriver, was thrilled that TomKat’s baby girl was born in the nursery named after her inside Santa Monica’s St. John’s Hospital. “It’s a nursery at St. John’s Hospital where I had all four of my kids,” she said. “Beautiful nursery, beautiful place to have a child. We took great pains to make sure men could sleep in there so they had no excuse to go home.” (Extratv)

Cruise is then joined by legendary M:I: III stunt coordinator Vic Armstrong to talk about and then demonstrate how to safely perform a stunt where he flips his car at the end of a heated chase scene. Kids also have the opportunity to get up-close and personal with Cruise and ask him questions like: “When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?” (an actor or an astronaut); “Who is your favorite athlete?” (Mohammad Ali) and “What is your fondest childhood memory?” (traveling).

The show “20/20′s” Deborah Roberts interviewed Tom about M:I-III and of course asked about Suri. Tom replied: “It was everything that we wanted it to be. … It was spiritual. It was powerful. It was indescribable. What words can you use? It’s still something that I’m processing and keep reliving,”. You can read the interview and watch a little video clip on ABC. M:I-3 London Premiere
First off, I’ll join everyone else in congratulating Tom and Katie on their baby girl! All the best to the happy couple!
The Mission: Impossible 3 London premiere is set to take place on April 25 at Leicester Square. UIP.co.uk is giving away one ticket for a lucky winner plus friend to attend this event. The contest is only open to UK/Ireland residents.
Talk about an impossible mission: promoting a movie the day after its megastar and his famous-actor fiancee had their first child together. That was the case Wednesday as cast members of the new Tom Cruise film “Mission: Impossible III” did what they could to talk up their movie in the wake of the arrival of the baby girl delivered by actress Katie Holmes on Tuesday.
The film’s co-stars said they were happy for the new parents.
“Well, I’m thrilled for them, as a couple,” the American-born Hong Kong film star Maggie Q told AP Television News. “That’s an exciting thing for anyone, really. But, I mean, especially for them, because he loves being a father.”
A spokesperson from the film’s distributor, Paramount Pictures, said Cruise may reschedule media interviews for Friday. The film opens in U.S. theaters on May 5.
British actor Jonathan Rhys-Myers said there is, indeed, some value to all of the media attention paid to the baby – but not to the movie. “You know, I’m sure it’s very, very exciting because it’s a media moneymaker,” he explained. “Of course, how many magazine articles, magazine pages will be devoted to Tom and Katie and the baby? You know, it’s an industry. I just hope that they give Tom and Katie time to be new parents, and give that little girl the space she needs to grow up and be a little girl.”
Keri Russell said she at least partially understood the public’s fascination with the actors’ offspring. “I think it’s natural to feel like you know people that you see,” she said. “It’s just like it’s a fairy tale. You’re watching these archetypes. You’re watching them and you’re trying to find connections with your own life, and those are two very accessible people. And I get it. But you got to let them have their kid, do their own thing.”
But others questioned the intense interest and said the paparazzi should be regulated. “There’s gonna be a bill passed sooner or later that’s gonna draw a line …” actor Ving Rhames said. “We have to just think about, ‘What have we become? Why is all of this fuss over another human being?’”
eitb24.com.
playfuls.com adds: Cruise announced the good news in a e-mail to TV host Diane Sawyer, who read it yesterday on “Good Morning America.” The actor said that “It’s a girl! It’s a girl! Her name is Suri and she is gorgeous.” He added that his fiancée “was and is a champ through the whole labor process”.
Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise’s ex-wife, which whom he has two adopted children, apparently said the following on the birth: “I hope both mother and baby are doing well,” but did not mention her ex-husband. Rumor has it that she recently had an argument with Cruise, because he wanted their children, Connor, 11, and Isabella, 13, to be present at Holmes’ birth. Kidman opposed this, saying that being in the delivery room would be traumatic for the children.
ETOnline has a little video of Celebs congratulating Tom and Katie with the birth of little Suri. AccessHollywood mentiones some details about the delivery and family comments.
