Black News‘ Kam Williams interviewed Tom. Here’s the complete interview:

KW: What was the inspiration behind this third installment?

TC: I remember as a kid, I would cut grass and dig ditches so that I could have the money to go the movies to see the ones I liked several times. I thought about the potential of this to give an audience a summer experience. I want to kick off their summer.

KW: What makes this sequel special?

TC: I really wanted this one to be more personal. When I started Mission: Impossible, I had never done sequels. But with this, there’s always the potential of a new adventure to go on. I’m fascinated by this genre. And when J.J. Abrams came on board, I was so excited, because I had seen his work before. Here’s this filmmaker who also loves this genre, knows it better than anyone, and has this incredibly unique voice. He can tell a story in the way of the great pulps of the Twenties and Thirties. Very tight, layered, relevant and resonant, but not pretentious.

KW: As a producer, how do you go about handing the reins of the Mission: Impossible franchise to a first-time director?

TC: Hey, this is J.J. Abrams. When J.J. came on, I said, “Look, there’s no constraints. I want to know what you want to do with this. I believe in you as a filmmaker.”

KW: Were you a very hands-on producer?

TC: When I work, I’m the actor. I’m going to do my job. I’m not going to direct the movie. If I wanted to direct it, I would direct it. I wanted J.J. Abrams to direct Mission: Impossible. I work with people that I respect. I expect them to do their jobs, and I will do mine. And I am there as a producer to help in any way, but no one makes a movie by themselves. It’s a collaboration.

KW: How do you find your comfort level with a director?

TC: It’s understanding J.J.’s vision. What does he want? Are we aligned? And to keep that alignment there. I do want that chemistry when I’m working, that contribution to the story. I felt that with Steven [Spielberg], and I felt that immediately with J.J. That’s what it’s about.

KW: What sort of chemistry did you share with J.J. collaborating on this film?

TC: It was fun creating it together, and designing it. Every time J.J. would create a sequence, I was like, “Man, I can’t wait to figure out how we’re going to do this.” And that’s part of the fun of it.

KW: So, you two focused on choreographing the action sequences together?

TC: We didn’t talk about the action sequences. The action was fine. Action was actually the last thing we talked about with Mission: Impossible. Not the first thing. We made an agreement not to discuss any action sequences, at all, until we nailed the story. My intention and my hope was always to add more to the personal aspects of the picture.

KW: So, it sounds like J.J. was very enthusiastic about directing.

TC: He has an enthusiasm about everything. He is literally a creative force. He creates art all the time, writing… drawing… And his ideas and discipline of storytelling and structure are always right on track. That’s what I want in a collaboration. I expect everyone I’m working with, down to Craft Service, the P.A.s, to do their jobs and enjoy it. Let’s get real, I have the best, I can’t even call it a job, the best life in the world. I get to do something that I love. I think it’s a privilege to be able to make movies. That’s something that I have never taken for granted. And I get that with J.J. So, yes, I do want that chemistry. That’s what I’m looking for. That doesn’t mean there aren’t challenges, because there are huge problems that you have to all come together to solve. We spent a year and a half thinking and talking about my scene with Michelle Monaghan on top of the roof, discussing the conceptual, emotional feeling that we want from the film. And then suddenly, it just evolves. You create it on the spur of the moment. And it becomes everything you wanted but even more. And it’s different from what you ever thought it was going to be. I love the surprises in the collaboration of filmmaking.

KW: How did Michelle Monaghan come to play your wife?

TC: I met her when I was shooting War of the Worlds. She’s just a lovely, talented actress, and very real. And she brings an obvious beauty, and a real sense of decency and humanity. You just want to be around her. You enjoy being around her.

KW: And why did you settle on Philip Seymour Hoffman as the villain?

TC: Look at his range, from the nurse in Magnolia to… just look at all of his characters. He’s just one of the great American actors. Here, you see him play this bad guy who is a badass. This guy is beyond tough, and it was so much fun playing the scenes with him.

David Giammarco from Wednesday’s Globe and Mail was part of the M:I-III tour! Here’s his summary of the tour:

MEXICO CITY — Late last week, as the customs official leafed through my passport, something caught his attention. His brow furrowed and his eyes suddenly narrowed with suspicion.

“Why have you been to America, Paris, London, Rome and now Mexico City all in one week?” he questioned. “What exactly do you do?”
I conjured up the best Spanish I could after a sleepless 12-hour flight and explained that I’m part of the Mission: Impossible III tour.
“Ahh, Tom Crooose,” he smiled, immediately stamping my passport and waving me through. “No problema, señor.”

Evidently, those are the two magic words that open the doors to any city, as I discovered criss-crossing the globe with Cruise last year for War of the Worlds and now again for Mission: Impossible III (which makes its U.S. debut at the Tribeca Film Festival tonight and opens in wide release on Friday). From Rome, Berlin and Tokyo to Mexico City, whole city blocks are shut down for Cruise, thousands of fans line up for his arrival, and shop merchants and restaurant waiters are giddy. It’s the top story of TV broadcasts and makes front-page headlines in all the daily papers.

The first stop in Rome was bedlam. The 43-year-old star vowed that he decided at the last minute to depart for Italy, leaving behind his fiancée, Katie Holmes, and their newborn daughter, Suri. Arriving from Los Angeles 20 minutes into the afternoon press conference that had M:I III director J..J. Abrams and co-stars Keri Russell, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laurence Fishburne holding court in his absence, Cruise generated a wave of cheers and applause from the Italian media. Some members of the media later felt no shame in besieging Cruise for autographs and photos.

That evening, the Piazza Del Popollo was jammed to capacity for the premiere, with 15,000 Italians clamouring to get a glimpse or photo of the superstar. Cruise seemed genuinely overwhelmed by the turnout and spent 31/2 hours signing autographs. This delayed the premiere for a few hours, forcing most of the television media to miss their red-carpet sound bites from Cruise. as he was whisked into the screening. He vowed to make it up the next day in London.

After a few hours sleep, it was time for the Leicester Square premiere. Storm clouds threatened the proceedings, but the rain was averted long enough for Cruise to sign autographs for another four hours. In the midst of the proceedings, Cruise admitted he had not really slept since Suri was born, performing round-the-clock “B and B duty” with Holmes. “She breastfeeds and I burp,” he said with a laugh. “Are you kidding me? I love it. I changed her very first diaper.”

Jetting into Paris the next morning, Cruise said he had mixed emotions. about the city. He had always felt he’d only return with Holmes, since it was Paris where the couple became engaged last year. But it seems even Tom Cruise can’t stop this promotional juggernaut., which grows more unpredictable by the minute.

Arriving in his suite at the Ritz Hotel, Cruise was greeted by a surprise delivery sent from Holmes: an Eiffel Tower vase filled with red roses. That afternoon, Cruise hit the streets to go shopping with his children Isabelle, 13, and Connor, 11, who have also been accompanying him on this tour. And when it came time for the Paris premiere, Cruise made a spectacular entrance by flying across the city in a black helicopter and touching down at the start of the red carpet with the Mission: Impossible theme pumping through massive speakers. Again, Cruise proved himself the exuberant 15-year-old kid at heart — thrill-seeker, adrenaline junkie — as French police held up the barricades after fans surged forward to get close to him. A few teenage girls had to be lifted from the crowd for safety by Cruise’s security staff — led by a former commander from Israel’s Secret Service.

With a couple of days off before the Mission: Impossible III premiere in Mexico City, Cruise flew home to Los Angeles to be with his family, while I arrived in the city early in hopes of shaking off the jet lag. Wrong place for that.

Tom Cruise Answers Audience Questions
New dad and blockbuster actor Tom Cruise is kicking off the summer movie season with “Mission: Impossible III,” the latest installment of the hit “Mission Impossible” franchise.

After a whirlwind promotional tour, he expects to join fiancee Katie Holmes and his new daughter, Suri, at home tonight to resume his fatherly duties.

“Suri, she’s very strong. She’s kicking,” said Cruise, who said he was afraid that she would kick herself off the table when he reached for diapers.

Cruise said that he went shopping in Paris for clothes for Suri. “The fun that I had,” he said. “Little girl clothes are incredible.”

Kicking Off the Summer

Cruise’s personal life seems like it could not get any better, and “Mission: Impossible III” is expected to be a smash.
He will again play super-agent Ethan Hunt in the movie, which is full of action and thrilling stunts. Today, after promoting in London, Paris and Rome, he will be all around New York City on a media blitz.

“It will be intense today,” he said. “This is a ‘Mission: Impossible’ day. I got the briefing from you know, my gang at Paramount. They are like, ‘You have to be on that train at such and such a time.’ … I just wanted to kick off summer with ‘Mission: Impossible.’”

Cruise came to the “Good Morning America” studios to field questions from the audience.

Audience: Which stunt from the movie was the most challenging?
Cruise: There was a long sprint in the movie. That was challenging because it was at the end of the picture. My body was run down and I had to do about — I think I had to do it five or six times. Getting slammed up against the car — that was challenging. That knocked the wind out of me.

Audience: Any plans for a comedy?
Cruise: This character gives me a chance to play a romantic comedy because it is a love story. I have been looking for comedy. They are hard to come by. I’m looking for one.

Audience: What’s your favorite mode of personal transportation?
Cruise: Well, I have to say I love flying airplanes. I’m a pilot. I love flying airplanes. You know, then I — I get it where I need to get on a motorcycle. Then I have to fly a helicopter because I like that also. I like mixing it up. (ABCNews)

At the MTV show TRL Live Tom Cruise was given the cutest present for Suri yesterday. He was given a present from guitar film Gibson and a US cable TV network a miniature pink mini-Flying V guitar with Suri’s name on the side. On receiving the gift, Cruise was stunned before saying: “Are you kidding me? That’s hot. That’s beautiful.”

ABERDEEN, Wash. — Radio station K-B-K-W reports that actor Tom Cruise will be in Aberdeen on Tuesday for a private screening of “Mission Impossible Three” with a contest winner.

South Shore Mall general manager Nina Morean (ma-reen) says Paramount Pictures notified her of the local winner of the Paramount Pictures/Yahoo Peoples Premiere Sweepstakes. Cruise is to announce the winners name tonight after the New York premiere of his new action flick.

The grand prize in the online contest is a screening of “Mission Impossible Three” at the winner’s hometown theater with Cruise. The actor is scheduled to fly into Hoquiams Bowerman Field in a private jet Tuesday afternoon, then go to the mall theater for the private movie screening. (SeattlePI)

Eagle-eyed film fans will literally see TOM CRUISE on fire in new movie MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III – his hair was set ablaze in one scene and the actor insisted it stayed in the movie.
The daredevil actor was so concerned about co-star KERI RUSSELL during one stunt scene, he ignored his own perilous position near a blaze, and embers set his scalp on fire.
He recalls, “I felt so responsible with things blowing up around us and what happened is my hair caught on fire. If you see the shot, the flames are coming… and embers are flying off my hair.” pr-inside

Detroit Free Press says of Tom: It was 20 summers ago that Tom Cruise starred in “Top Gun,” his first $100 million-grossing movie.
But one thing hasn’t changed since 1986: Cruise as a top box office draw. Since “Top Gun,” 12 more movies headlined by the actor have grossed $100 million or more domestically, including the last six.

I’ve also read that Katie is preparing to accompanie Tom to a fans only screening on Cruise’s new film ‘Mission: Impossible III’ in Hollywood tomorrow!

yahoo: Tom Cruise whipped off his sunglasses with flair and flashed a winning smile as he greeted a hotel ballroom packed with journalists in Mexico’s capital.

His mission: to promote his new film, “Mission: Impossible III,” which opens in theaters Friday.
“We really wanted a story that’s going to leave the audience feeling emboldened and empowered when they leave the theater,” the 43-year-old actor said Monday.

His fiancee, 27-year-old Katie Holmes, gave birth last month in Los Angeles to the couple’s first child, a daughter named Suri.
“The hours go by so quickly as I just stare at her,” Cruise said of spending time with his newborn.

When a reporter asked about a widely circulated comment Cruise made in an interview with GQ magazine about eating his child’s placenta, Cruise laughed and said, “That’s ridiculous.”
He later said he doesn’t pay attention to media reports that criticize his personal life.

When he was done fielding questions, Cruise came down from the stage and mingled with journalists. At one point he produced a small digital camera and snapped some pictures of those jockeying for position to photograph him.

Cruise starred in 1996′s “Mission: Impossible,” directed by Brian De Palma, and 2000′s “Mission: Impossible II,” directed by John Woo. This latest installment was directed by J.J. Abrams, creator of the TV series “Lost” and “Alias.”

“He’s a sensational filmmaker. I wanted a J.J. Abrams’ `Mission: Impossible,’” Cruise said.

It’s a character that I’m playing, and when I’m doing it, we can put the camera right in there and the audience can have more of a subjective reality. … You’re locked in there with the character.”

” ‘Mission: Impossible’ is his baby,” Abrams said of Cruise, the star and producer of the decade-old series. “It’s his franchise. But he let me make my movie,” the 39-year-old TV veteran said of his first flick, for which he also received a shiny new toy: Hollywood’s most desirable action figure. “He said from the beginning: ‘I want this movie to be J.J.’s “Mission: Impossible III.” I am your actor.’

While in Paris to promote Mission: Impossible III, Tom Cruise skipped a press conference on Wednesday to go shopping baby clothes for his daughter, Suri, according to organizers.
He didn’t disappoint his fans, though. The 43-year-old actor arrived by helicopter at La Defense, the high-rise complex on the western edge of Paris, where thousands of fans who turned up to see de film’s premiere. Cruise took his time to treat them with autographs.

Earlier, at the news conference, movie co-star Michelle Monaghan was asked by director J.J. Abrams what was like to kiss Cruise with Katie Holmes on the set.
Was it weird?, Abrams asked. No way, she replied. Just in general to kiss Tom Cruise is, you know … an experience of a lifetime, she jested. I highly recommend it. … I said to Katie, ‘I understand why you keep him around’. (playfuls.com)

She explains, “Tom is so into doing the stunts and he’s so good at them, so most of the things I do are with him. They’ll take like eight hours to set up. We’ll be jumping off the top of this building in downtown LA onto a moving van. He’s in a harness, I’m in a harness and I’m hanging onto him as we jump off. Two minutes before we’re about to do this, they come up and say, ‘Now if you don’t want to do this, we can take the two hours and take it all down. Like I can say no! Tom is waiting! The thing is, Tom has done it for so long and is so good at it, it kind of felt safe being with him. I figured they’re not going to kill Tom Cruise, so if I’m with him, I’m safe!”

Tom Cruise was so determined to get J.J. Abrams to direct the third installment of his “Mission: Impossible” franchise that he persuaded Paramount Pictures to put the project on hold for a year. He also helped persuade Steven Spielberg to move up production on “War of the Worlds” and postpone work on “Munich” to accommodate Abrams’ schedule.
Once he finally stepped behind the cameras, Abrams found himself wondering how he, a neophyte filmmaker who had come to fame on the small screen creating the influential television hits “Lost” and “Alias,” had ended up on the set of a $165-million Tom Cruise movie.

“The conversations” were that with just weeks before production was to commence on “Mission: Impossible III,” director Joe Carnahan (“Narc”) was off the film and Cruise wanted Abrams as his replacement. The switch would cost Paramount some $30 million in sunk costs.

Then Cruise watched the first two seasons of “Alias,” which, Abrams explains, was partially inspired by the “Mission: Impossible” TV show. The actor apparently liked what he saw.
“He invited me and my wife to a concert one night, and I invited him to my birthday party,” Abrams said. “He came, hung out and was one of the last to leave. It was like — ‘How the hell is Tom Cruise at our house?’ ”

“I met with Tom and Paula, and Tom gave me that ‘Risky Business’ smile and said, ‘Do you want to do it?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I want to do it. But what is it? What’s the story? I haven’t read the script,’ ” Abrams said.
Abrams gave the script a look: “I felt my heart sink.” Abrams believed the first two “Mission: Impossible” movies had not captured the quintessential spirit of the TV series, and he found the screenplay for the third film too dark, too political, too impersonal.
“I’m just not the guy to make that movie,” Abrams said he told Cruise after reading the script. “And he said, ‘What would you want to do?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know exactly, but I know I want to do a much more personal story, something more character-based than mission-based.’ I thought he would say, ‘Well, we have to shoot in two months. Next time, we’ll do something.’ But he said, ‘Let’s do that version.’ ”

I’ve seperated the general news from the M:I-III news because there is so much written these days and this way it’s easier to choose what to read (first?). Of course there is still much reported about Tom & Katie and their beautiful daughter Suri.

Tom wants to do a movie together with Katie, reports Hollywood.com: The actor is convinced a Hollywood collaboration would help maintain their romantic spark, while allowing them to successfully co-parent baby Suri. He says, “I can’t wait to do a movie with Kate. I don’t think working together is a bad idea at all, a relationship can definitely work under that pressure if you like someone enough.”

The Irish Examiner reports that Tom & Katie have chosen Jamie Foxx and Kanye West honorary uncles to their baby daughter Suri:

Cruise became close to Foxx after they starred together in Collateral. He became friends with West after he and Foxx collaborated on the track Golddigger.
The star revealed at the London premiere of Mission: Impossible III: “Jamie Foxx is going to be uncle. I asked him today and he’s accepted. He’s an amazing guy. And when I get back to the States I’m gonna ask Kanye West.”
