Cruise on espnthemag.com
We got a nice little interview with Tom this weekend at the NASCAR event:
MEDIA BLITZ: TALKING NASCAR WITH TOM CRUISE. TOM CRUISE!
by Sam Alipour
You had me at … “Gentleman, start your engines.”
(Ed.’s note: The Mag sent contributor Sam Alipour to the Auto Club Speedway to write a story on Ryan Newman’s pit crew, and NOT to interview Tom Cruise. Let’s just say things worked out differently.)
Sam Alipour (like a cheerleader at a homecoming rally): Tom, Sam Alipour, ESPN The Magazine.
Tom Cruise: (Big smile) What’s up, man?
Alipour: Huge fan.
Cruise: (Bigger smile) Thanks man
Alipour: It’s funny, some of the guys on Ryan Newman’s team randomly told me this morning that they love Days of Thunder.
Cruise: (Average smile) That’s great. That’s great. (Signs an autograph for a young fan.)
Alipour: Do you get that a lot?
Cruise: (No smile) What do you mean, do I? I mean, I’m glad people like it. It was a very special film for me.
Alipour: Did it make you a NASCAR fan?
Cruise: You kidding? Absolutely. No, that’s how I came up with that idea. I was racing—I love racing. I was racing with (Paul) Newman. I wanted to make a movie about NASCAR because I grew up watching it.
Alipour: Any plans to do another sports movie?
Cruise: Yeah, if I can find something. I’d like to. That’s cool that they said that about Days of Thunder because I love that special, special film.
Alipour: Yeah, the Alltell guys are looking for you.
Cruise: (Laughs) That’s great.
Alipour: They’re tough guys, you know?
Cruise: (Laughs) I know man, I know. I worked with them (Big smile.)
Alipour: I bet they’d love to meet you.
Cruise: I wish I could, but I’m here with my son. (Smile)
Alipour: I hear ya. Just playing matchmaker. (I laugh.)
Cruise: (He laughs) I know. I know the drill man. (Big smile)
Alipour: You’re hanging out with Jimmie Johnson’s team—how do you know Jimmie?
Cruise: Yeah, I met Jimmie, but I’ve known Rick Hendrick forever. I met Jeff Gordon before. And I had a chance to meet Dale Earnhardt when we were doing Days of Thunder. I spent an afternoon with him. Real nice.
Alipour: Good dude?
Cruise: Yeah, great dude. Rick Hendrick I’ve known forever. He was very helpful during Days of Thunder. It’s amazing where NASCAR has gone since that film.
Alipour: You were on NASCAR before it was mainstream. Do you think that you helped contribute to its growth?
Cruise: There’s things that they did in the film visually, when you look at the cars, to make it cinematic. NASCAR was on a lot of that stuff already, but all of the technology we developed for the race scenes … (Shakes head.) I’m really glad that it’s getting as big as it is, because I love the sport. (Big smile. Extends hand.) Real pleasure.
Alipour: The pleasure was all mine. I will go to my grave saying this: You were robbed three times of the Oscar.
Cruise: (The biggest smile of all. Shakes my hand with more vigor.) Thanks, man. That really means a lot. What was your name again?
Alipour: Sam Alipour. ESPN The Magazine.
Cruise: Thanks man. A pleasure.
(He lets go of my hand, then turns away to sign more autographs, still smiling. I stand there for several minutes, like a creep, watching him.) (Source: ESPN Magazine)

THE BIRD CAGE
THE BIRD CAGE: On Friday evening, designer Erin Fetherston,
accompanied by Satine’s Jeannie Lee and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’
stylist Jeanne Yang, hosted a screening of the short film “A Dreamy
Wander,” directed by Ellen von Unwerth, inside the aviary-like Villa
nightclub in West Hollywood. In the eight-minute movie, actress Zooey
Deschanel, clad in Fetherston’s fall collection, portrays a runaway
orphan in an enchanted forest who nibbles on some magic mushroom with
hallucinatory results. Deschanel, who was shooting a feature in New
York, didn’t attend the soiree, but fellow actresses Rosario Dawson,
Leelee Sobieski and Angie Harmon came out to toast the 26-year-old New
York-based designer. “She is a lovely human being,” gushed Dawson,
wearing a short shimmering white Fetherston number, adding that she
and Fetherston had initially met at a charity event. Fetherston
confessed she caught the filmmaking bug after her first collaboration
with von Unwerth on the short “Wendybird,” starring Kirsten Dunst, in
2005. “I intend to make more,” she said. (Source: Women’s Wear Daily)

Katie Holmes has claimed that “time stopped” when she was first introduced to husband Tom Cruise.
The actress, who became engaged to Cruise after a whirlwind romance in 2005, said they had felt an immediate connection.
She told InStyle: “It happened in an instant. When you fall in love, it’s like time stops.”
She added that the relationship was still going strong, saying: “I try every day to make Tom know how much I love him. It gets better and better.
“[He] and I stay in really good communication with each other. I talk to him about anything, at any time. He works 48 hours straight, comes home, and if I ask, ‘Would you help me with this?’ he’ll do it.”
Holmes, 29, also praised her husband for his help during the birth of their daughter Suri in 2006.
She said: “I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive human being. He had the room ready, candles everywhere. It was very homey and beautiful.”

Initiative focuses on Latin America

Joined by stars such as Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Shakira and Elton John, former president Bill Clinton told a Toronto fundraising crowd last night of his latest foreign aid efforts in Latin America and the developing world.
The project, part of the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative, will assist local leaders in addressing issues of social, economic and environmental impact through employment and economy.
Clinton started the initiative last June to create sustainable development in Latin American countries where natural resources dominate the economy.
“The world is bedevilled by three great crises: the persistent and growing inequality in economic opportunity, education and health care; the insecurity caused by our interdependence making us vulnerable to terror, to weapons of mass destruction, to the spread of dangerous materials, to global epidemics; and the unsustainability of our current developmental course because of the threats of global warming,” Clinton told more than 1,000 people at the Westin Harbour Castle Convention Centre.
Tables at the event cost between $25,000 and $300,000.
Vancouver mining financier Frank Giustra has pledged $100 million to the project, plus half of his future earnings from the natural resources sector.
The initiative has raised more than $300 million so far. (Source: The Star)

Tom Cruise’s J.Lo party
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are set to host a £100,000 party to celebrate the birth of Jennifer Lopez’s twins.
The ‘Top Gun’ star and the former ‘Dawson’s Creek’ actress are good friends with J.Lo and her husband Marc Anthony and have arranged a ‘Welcome to the World’ bash for the couple’s newborn boy and girl.
A source said: “Tom and Katie are thrilled for Jennifer and Marc and have offered to throw a party for the twins next month.”
The party at Tom and Katie’s Los Angeles home will have a pink and blue theme and guests expected to attend include John Travolta, Eva Longoria Parker and David and Victoria Beckham.
The soccer ace and his Spice Girl wife have offered to help Tom and Katie with the baby bash.
Meanwhile, David and Victoria have been getting advice from Tom on adoption.
The couple – who already have three sons, Brooklyn, eight, Romeo, five, and three-year-old Cruz – are keen to have a daughter and are reportedly considering adoption.
Tom has two adopted children, a daughter Isabella, 15, and 13-year-old son Connor, with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.
A source said: “Victoria definitely wants a girl but she’s not sure she wants to go through a fourth pregnancy.” (Source: nz.city, 28 February 2008)
