Sorry “Top Gun” fans, it appears Tom Cruise returning to the franchise has not been cleared for take off.
Earlier this week, reports surfaced suggesting Cruise was in line to reprise his role as Maverick in the fighter jet film, 22 years after the original.
However, “Access Hollywood” has confirmed those reports are false.
When contacted by “Access,” a spokesperson for Paramount (which released “Top Gun” in 1986) said there was “no way” Cruise would be returning to the role.
In addition, a rep for Cruise also told “Access” the reports of a Maverick reprisal are completely untrue.
According to the erroneous reports, the sequel would have seen Cruise’s character returning to Top Gun school as a flight instructor.
Fans can catch Cruise on the big screen in a brief cameo in the upcoming comedy “Tropic Thunder,” which hits theaters Aug. 13.
His next starring role will come in the World War II drama “Valkyrie,” slated for a February 2009 release. (MSNBC)

Fox News’ Roger Friedman is reporting that Tom Cruise is set to be replaced by Will Smith in the Phillip Noyce drama, Edwin A. Salt. The problem is, it’s not true.
Moviehole reports: “We can confirm that this isn’t true - none of it. High-ranking contacts within the production tell us - and we quote - “The studio, producers, director and potential star (Cruise) are all waiting on a rewrite of the script from Kurt Wimmer, which is due in a few weeks. Will Smith has not been approached to star. Cruise is the only actor who has been approached.”
The Columbia Pictures release is about a CIA officer who is fingered by a defector as a Russian sleeper spy. Salt must elude capture by his superiors and sets out to reunite with his family and prove his innocence. (ComingSoon.net)
Katie Holmes gets picked up and escorted home by husband Tom Cruise after spending some time with her mom in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday.
The 29-year-old actress has been shooting for her guest spot on Eli Stone.
Eli producer Marc Guggenheim told E! that Katie, who is shooting in the next few days, might return. “There is absolutely the possibility for the character to recur. She’s wonderful and if she wants to come back, she’s more than welcome.”
“She is not just in one or two scenes. She is in a significant portion of the scenes. She is singing and dancing, but we do want to keep some of that a secret.” (Source: Just Jared)

The idea of playing a fat, balding movie executive in Ben Stiller’s new comedy Tropic Thunder was all Tom Cruise’s.
The actor is largely unrecognisable in the new film and Stiller admits he had to do nothing to get the movie icon into a fat suit.
The funnyman explains, “The role was his idea. It wasn’t even in the script. I didn’t have to persuade him.
“Tom is amazing. We’d be talking about the characters, and in the middle of the conversation he’d say something like, `My character should have these giant hands.’
“I seriously believe the man is a movie savant.” (ContactMusic)
NEW YORK (AP) — Katie Holmes is coming back to TV — and yes, there’s a Dawson’s Creek connection.
The actress and wife of Tom Cruise will guest star as a nonprofit attorney in one episode of the legal dramedy Eli Stone, ABC publicist Aime Wolfe told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Entertainment Weekly reported Wednesday on its website that Holmes was to appear in the show’s second season this fall. That means the 29-year-old star will work again with show creator Greg Berlanti, who was a writer-producer for the teen drama Dawson’s Creek, which starred Holmes as tomboy Joey Potter.
Holmes — who’ll likely decamp to New York with daughter Suri in tow — will make her Broadway debut Sept. 18 in a revival of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons.
The production, which also stars John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest and Patrick Wilson, officially opens Oct. 16 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre for a limited engagement through Jan. 11.
The Top Gun’s teenage son, Connor, has been taking flying lessons at a Burbank airfield.
At his father’s airplane hangar in Burbank this past Saturday afternoon—and after doing a few tricks on one of his two motorcycles—Connor boarded a small prop airplane for his flying lesson.
According to a source, Connor, with an instructor, practiced taking off, cruising and landing the Cessna 172 Skyhawk about three times. The teenager finished his lesson at 7:30 p.m. without incident.
Sources tell E! News it’s perfectly legal for 13-year-olds to take flying lessons if they are big enough to operate all the controls (reach pedals, etc.) and have passed all required student exams.
However, according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s website, he cannot get a license until he is 16.
At which point it’s goodbye ground, hello danger zone. (E! Online, 14 July, 2008)
Leaving the girls at home, Tom Cruise and son Connor cheered on David Beckham yesterday, his first anniversary in the U.S.
The Cruise crew was joined by Beckham’s oldest son Brooklyn as well Little Britain star Matt Lucas and TV producer Simon Fuller as they watched his team play a tense derby against league rivals Chivas USA.
The A-list bunch all sat together in a VIP box at the Hope Depot Center in California as Becks played at the home LA Galaxy stadium.
So, where were wifey Victoria Beckham and their other boys, Romeo and Cruz? Back in London tending to business, but worry not — they’ll be home this weekend for a Beckham style family reunion. (Source: Faded Youth Blog)

The search for a high-end Manhattan rental continues for Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Holmes recently showed up at Trump Park Avenue, where she spent over a half-hour perusing the duplex penthouse with a $200,000-a-month price tag.
“She saw it and she loved it,” says Trump Executive Vice President Michael Cohen, who added that the condo is also for sale at $45 million. “They’re very interested and are now making their decision.”
The unit at 502 Park Ave. has 5,000 square feet of interior space plus approximately 2,000 square feet of terraces. There are four bedrooms, 6½ bathrooms, a den, a library, a dining room and an eat-in kitchen with high-end appliances.
Also featured in the unit are 20-foot ceilings, two staircases, 360-degree views through its 50 windows and three large chandeliers.
“And we have a security system that’s second to none,” says Cohen.
He cites a state-of-the art surveillance network plus 24-hour doormen and hall men - who’ve likely got their hands full just keeping the strippers away from resident Alex Rodriguez.
We previously reported that Holmes, who will co-star in the Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons” this fall, has concentrated her search on the Upper East Side. She also looked at a six-bedroom townhouse apartment in the East 80s with a $60,000-a-month price tag. (NYPost, 10 July, 2008)
The Cruise family has sent along a present to welcome little Sunday Rose Kidman Urban, PEOPLE has learned.
Contrary to some reports that Tom Cruise gave ex-wife Nicole Kidman a “room full of flowers,” the actor and his family – including Cruise’s children with Kidman, Bella, 15, and Connor, 13 – actually sent a huge baby basket to Nashville.
The high-end gift included chenille Giraffe baby blankets, items from the Hermes baby line and other newborn necessities.
Kidman, 41, gave birth to Sunday Rose at a Nashville hospital on Monday morning, with husband Keith Urban, 40, by her side for the smooth delivery.
“We feel immensely blessed and grateful to be given this beautiful baby girl,” the happy couple said in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE. “She’s an absolute delight.” (People, 11 July, 2008)
X17Online reports that Katie sent Nicole “a Neiman Marcus gift basket overflowing with baby presents - onesies, stuffed toys, a baby blanket, that kind of thing.
Katie’s make-nice gesture didn’t come cheap, though - an insider tells that Katie dropped over two grand!
“Katie wanted the best of everything in the basket,” the insider said. “It cost over $2,000.”
The posh gift basket included chenille Giraffe baby blankets and Hermes baby clothes. In June, Katie, 29, sent a swanky gift basket to Nicole, who was then 8 months pregnant. The elegant $2,000 assortment was overflowing with stuffed toys, a baby blanket and other posh baby paraphernalia from Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills.
so it seems they have sent two baskets! Very nice of Tom & Katie!

While Cruise hasn’t firmly committed to star in the film yet, he has remained attached to the project though it has gone through script changes and different possible directors. The film does not have a production start date as of yet. (ArtistDirect.com, 7 July, 2008)

Will Smith is planning to make a film with pal Tom Cruise.
The ‘Men in Black‘ star says he has been trying to find a suitable project for them to star in, but has so far been unsuccessful.
He explained, “Me and Tom have to work together. I think that would just be genius.
“We have been pitching some ideas back and forth and trying to find a movie that will be big enough for both of us.”
Will — who is close friends with ‘Top Gun‘ star Cruise and his wife Katie Holmes — also said Tom is a “warm-hearted” person.
Will has also expressed an interest in teaming up with actor Daniel Day Lewis.

Phillip Noyce is negotiating to direct Edwin A. Salt, the Kurt Wimmer-scripted drama that Columbia Pictures has been developing as a star vehicle for Tom Cruise, reports Variety.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Sunil Perkash are producing.
The Australian helmer and Cruise had been mentioned as possible participants in the Warner Bros. drama The 28th Amendment, but recently their focus shifted to “Salt.” The drama casts Cruise as a CIA officer who’s accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy. He must elude capture long enough to clear his name.
Though he hasn’t firmly committed, Cruise has stayed with the film as Wimmer wrote drafts for directors Terry George and then Peter Berg before each ankled. (Source: Variety)
