CHICAGO (AP) — Tom Cruise didn’t jump on Oprah Winfrey’s couch this time. The actor was in Chicago on Thursday to tape an episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” a tribute to his showbiz career that took off 25 years ago when he danced in his underwear in “Risky Business.” Audience members told The Associated Press that Cruise’s demeanor was nothing like his infamous coach-jumping incident three years ago, when he made a spectacle of himself while proclaiming his love for now wife Katie Holmes.

He was really calm and collected,” said Diane Andonovski of Toronto, Canada.

Cruise was accompanied by immediate and extended family members, including Holmes and the couple’s 2-year-old daughter Suri, audience member Jenny Hume of England said.

It was half of a two-part interview Winfrey did with Cruise that will air Friday and Monday. For Friday’s show, Winfrey interviewed the 45-year-old actor at his home in Telluride, Colo. Monday’s show was taped at her Chicago studio in front of an audience.

In a preview of Friday’s show posted on her Web site, Winfrey asked Cruise if he feels he has been misunderstood, thinks he has come under attack unnecessarily and how he has been accepted by his wife Katie Holmes’ family. Winfrey mentions his criticism of actress Brooke Shields for taking antidepressants and his tiff with “Today” show host Matt Lauer over whether psychiatric treatment helps people.

Sally Maddy of Duluth, Minn., said Cruise talked to audience members during show breaks and seemed “so sweet and so sincere,” not to mention good looking.

He’s even cuter in person,” she said.

Audience members got a box of Cruise’s movies on DVDs as a gift. (The Associated Press)

Plus, an all-star lineup as Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Dustin Hoffman, Renee Zellweger, Steven Spielberg, David and Victoria Beckham, Dakota Fanning, and Jamie Foxx each surprise Cruise with a tribute honoring his work in movies. Tom Cruise Opens Up For Oprah

Oprah headed to Telluride to interview Tom Cruise for the first time in three years and got right down to business in the episode that airs today. She didn’t shy away from the controversy that has surrounded him for years, getting him to touch on Scientology, his public feuds, and his family. While Tom’s attitude was more relaxed this time around, he’s not apologizing for anything that has happened. Here are highlights:

On the couch-jumping incident: “I just felt that way, and I feel that way about her. I can’t even articulate it, to be honest. That feeling, that connection. Just who she is and what she means to me.”
On attacking Matt Lauer: “I was feeling pressed in the interview with Matt Lauer. For me, my issue was really about child drugging. It’s not like it is today, like people are really kind of openly talking about this.”
On Suri: “She’s spectacular. She really is just magic.”
On keeping Suri hidden for three months: “We just want to have our baby, have the kids and everyone get to know Suri, get the family up here and just chill and have that time that you never get back. You don’t ever get those moments back. Kate and I didn’t feel any need to [rush] it. We said, ‘Why? It’s our family.’ We just were on Suri time.”
To see what else Tom had to say about Scientology, “Kate,” and his reputation, just read more.

On Scientology: “It’s a minority religion, and I think that sometimes people misinterpret [it]. I think the best thing is for people to read about it themselves. I believe people have the right to choose what they believe in. The code of Scientologists says you respect the religious beliefs of others. That’s part of being a Scientologist, and that’s who I am as a person.”
On the speculation that his marriage is fake: “That’s laughable to me. You just know that they’re trying to sell it and spin it.”
On Katie’s family: “They’re amazing. I love them. You see why Kate is such an amazing woman — incredible integrity and strength. They’re family.”
On his reputation: “Listen I, I feel like definitely things have been misunderstood, and there are things I could have done better. But then there’s also that world where you go, ‘Oh, it’s been spun to such an extent that . . . that’s a truth also.’ Knowing when and where to communicate, I think that’s important. A lot of times I was nervous giving interviews. Or I wasn’t sometimes as comfortable about things. And I realized that it’s okay. There’s stuff you have to just let go. I just have to do the best I can.”
While Tom has certainly made it clear he has his set of beliefs, you’ve got to respect how passionate he is in everything he does. Monday continues with Tom and Oprah celebrating his 25 years in the business, so expect lots of hot clips (Risky Business underwear shot, Top Gun volleyball scene, Mission Impossible, and more) and clips from his famous celebrity friends.

Tom Cruise Talks Couch-Jumping and Family Life

Tom Cruise and Oprah Winfrey are sitting down to talk – but this time it’s on his couch.

In the first part of a two-part interview, Winfrey visits Cruise in his Telluride, Colo. home – and talk inevitably turns to the actor’s now-infamous couch jumping incident from 2005.

“[It] was a moment, and it was real,” Cruise says about his animated profession of love for Katie Holmes, in the interview to air on Friday. “I just felt that way, and I feel that way about her,” he continues. “I can’t even articulate it, to be honest. That feeling, that connection. Just who she is and what she means to me.”

Cruise also opens up about Holmes and private moments with his family. Here are some of the highlights from the first part of his interview. (The second part – filmed in Winfrey’s Chicago studio – is scheduled to air on Monday, May 5.)

    • On Connor and Bella’s impressions of Holmes: “Kate shows up with cupcakes. The cupcakes are there, and they all looked at me like, ‘This is cool. Can we eat these cupcakes? This lady’s cool.’”

    • On rumors about his relationship with Holmes: “That’s laughable to me. You just know that [tabloids are] trying to sell it and spin it.”

    • On Connor and Bella reading tabloid reports about Cruise:”They love me, so they know. They’ve grown up with that, and I’m sure there are things that they don’t like, and you go, ‘Okay, that happened, things go wrong, but don’t live in it. Don’t live in that because today is a new day and there’s plenty of tomorrows. They’re good people, my children. I’m proud of them.I don’t want them to worry. They know I’m there. No matter what, I’m always there.”

    • On dressing like Santa to surprise Suri: “I open the door, and I’m giving my best, ‘Oh, merry Christmas! Oh, look at this little girl,’ and Suri looks at me, and she says, ‘No – Dada!’ So that night, we were putting Suri down. Kate says, ‘How was it? Did you like it? What did you think of Santa?’ And Suri was really sweet, she looks up, and she goes, ‘Dada Santa.’”

    • On whether Cruise has been misunderstood: “Listen I, I feel like definitely things have been misunderstood, and there are things I could have done better. But then there’s also that world where you go, ‘Oh, it’s been spun to such an extent.’ ” (Source: People)

Tom Cruise to Oprah: I Have Been “Misunderstood”:

In the first part of his interview with Oprah Winfrey (airing Friday), Tom Cruise reveals that he jumped on her couch in 2005 because he was so in love with Katie Holmes and couldn’t contain himself.

Winfrey confessed that the incident caught her by surprise.

“When we finished that show with you jumping up on the sofa, I was like, ‘Wow. What was that?’” she tells him in an interview in his Telluride, Colo., home. “I had no idea it was going to turn into an international brouhaha, as I’m sure you did not either.”

She even confesses, “I was a little nervous coming up this morning, I have to admit, because you and I have not sat down for a real conversation since the sofa incident.”

Cruise tells Winfrey, “I just felt that way, and I feel that way about her.

“I can’t even articulate it, to be honest,” he adds. “That feeling, that connection. Just who she is and what she means to me.”

Of the negative response to his couch jumping, Cruise says, “It just kind of kept going.

“Those things I kind of go, ‘You just have to take in stride.’ It just kind of became a confluence of things.”

    ON ATTACKING MATT LAUER

He also opened up about his 2005 interview with Matt Lauer (Cruise attacked the anchor, calling him “glib” during a chat about psychiatry and the use of anti-depressant drugs).

“I was feeling pressed in the interview with Matt Lauer,” Cruise says. “For me, my issue was really about child drugging. It’s not like it is today, like people are really kind of openly talking about this.”

(Cruise now says of medicating children, “I think the parent should be able to and should make that decision.”)

    ON SLAMMING BROOKE SHIELDS

He says his comments on post-partum depression “came out wrong.” (He slammed Brooke Shields in the same 2005 interview for taking Paxil to treat post-partum depression following the birth of her daughter Rowan.)

“What I regret is even discussing Brooke in any way,” Cruise says.

He says the incident has brought the two of them “closer” (Shields attended his 2006 wedding to Holmes.)

    ON BEING A SCIENTOLOGIST

“It’s a minority religion, and I think that sometimes people misinterpret [it],” he says. “I think the best thing is for people to read about it themselves. I believe people have the right to choose what they believe in.

“The code of Scientologists says you respect the religious beliefs of others,” Cruise adds. “That’s part of being a Scientologist, and that’s who I am as a person.”

In January, videos leaked online of Cruise at Scientology events discussing the religion. He says the footage “was stolen. I was receiving an award that evening for global literacy. It was a very private moment. I’m actually talking to my congregation.”

“It’s [taken] totally out of context,” he adds.

ON BUYING A SONOGRAM MACHINE FOR HOLMES DURING HER PREGNANCY

Cruise says he and Holmes took great pains to keep her pregnancy private. “We went in the middle of the night, and we were very excited — this is such a private moment,” he says.

“My life was already a zoo,” he says. When news leaked, “it was off the charts.”

As for purchasing a sonogram machine for Holmes, Cruise explains, “When you’re having a baby, you just want it to be as safe and as easy as possible.”

ON KEEPING SURI HIDDEN FOR SO LONG

Lots of rumors spread about their daughter, Suri, because the couple kept her hidden after she was born. Some blogs speculated that the child was deformed. That talk, Cruise says, was “hard to hear.

“We just want to have our baby, have the kids and everyone get to know Suri, get the family up here and just chill and have that time that you never get back,” he explains. “You don’t ever get those moments back.”

On waiting three months to publish her photo in Vanity Fair in 2006, Cruise says, “Kate and I didn’t feel any need to [rush] it. We said, ‘Why? It’s our family.’ We just were on Suri time.”

    ON DAUGHTER SURI

“She’s spectacular,” he says. “She really is just magic.”

His two children with ex Nicole Kidman, Connor and Isabella, “were really excited.”

ON HIS MARRIAGE WITH HOLMES BEING FAKE

“That’s laughable to me,” Cruise says. ‘You just know that they’re trying to sell it and spin it.”

He says Holmes’ Catholic family has welcomed him.

“They’re amazing. I love them,” Cruise says. “You see why Kate is such an amazing woman — incredible integrity and strength. They’re family.”

ON RUMORS THAT HE HAS PUSHED NICOLE KIDMAN OUT OF THEIR KIDS’ LIVES

“No, that’s ridiculous,” he says. “We share custody. That’s what it is.”

    ON HIS REPUTATION

“Listen I, I feel like definitely things have been misunderstood, and there are things I could have done better,” Cruise admits. “But then there’s also that world where you go, ‘Oh, it’s been spun to such an extent that … that’s a truth also.’

He continues, “Knowing when and where to communicate, I think that’s important.

“A lot of times I was nervous giving interviews. Or I wasn’t sometimes as comfortable about things. And I realized that it’s okay.

“There’s stuff you have to just let go,” Cruise adds. “I just have to do the best I can.” (Source: Hip Hop Elements)

After interviewing Tom, Oprah said, “I had a great time with him, so that’s on Friday’s show. And then we’re celebrating 25 years of him in the business.”

This footage will air on The Oprah Winfrey Show this Friday, May 2.

Regal Entertainment Group Chairman and CEO Mike Campbell received the Pioneer of the Year award Wednesday night in Santa Monica, Calif., from the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation.

Campbell, who entered the movie theater business in 1982 in Claiborne County, formed Regal Cinemas Inc. in 1989 and has grown the Knoxville-based company to become the world’s largest theater chain.

Campbell was recognized for contributions to the film industry and was presented with the Pioneer of the Year award by actor Tom Cruise during a ceremony at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. The event raised $1.2 million for the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation and the proceeds will go to the Pioneers Assistance Fund to help motion picture industry veterans in need.

“I was certainly grateful and humbled by the award, but neither Regal nor I do what we do for the recognition. We do it because it is the right thing to do,” Campbell said Thursday.

Past Pioneer of the Year honorees have included Cecil B. DeMille, Jack Warner, Darryl F. Zanuck, Jack Valenti, Sumner Redstone and Sherry Lansing.

Campbell’s family and many Regal executives attended the presentation, which included entertainment by actor/comedian Kevin Pollack and music by John Fogerty.

“The entertainment was terrific. The highlight of the evening was Tom Cruise’s presentation of the Pioneer of the Year award to Mike Campbell,” said Regal spokesman Dick Westerling.

In his introduction of Campbell, Cruise pointed to characteristics the two have in common, including a passion for movies, meager backgrounds growing up and vows to help others less fortunate.

“Through hard work and determination, he turned a small business with one theater into the largest movie theater chain in the world,” Cruise said of Campbell. “He also revolutionized fundraising by being the first theater chain to promote to customers that Regal would donate a portion of the chain’s concession sales to charity. Not only did it improve concession sales, but it enabled Regal to raise over $14 million in the last 10 years on behalf of the Will Rogers Motion Picture Foundation.” (Source: Knox News)

THE BIRD CAGE: On Friday evening, designer Erin Fetherston,
accompanied by Satine’s Jeannie Lee and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’
stylist Jeanne Yang, hosted a screening of the short film “A Dreamy
Wander,” directed by Ellen von Unwerth, inside the aviary-like Villa
nightclub in West Hollywood. In the eight-minute movie, actress Zooey
Deschanel, clad in Fetherston’s fall collection, portrays a runaway
orphan in an enchanted forest who nibbles on some magic mushroom with
hallucinatory results. Deschanel, who was shooting a feature in New
York, didn’t attend the soiree, but fellow actresses Rosario Dawson,
Leelee Sobieski and Angie Harmon came out to toast the 26-year-old New
York-based designer. “She is a lovely human being,” gushed Dawson,
wearing a short shimmering white Fetherston number, adding that she
and Fetherston had initially met at a charity event. Fetherston
confessed she caught the filmmaking bug after her first collaboration
with von Unwerth on the short “Wendybird,” starring Kirsten Dunst, in
2005. “I intend to make more,” she said. (Source: Women’s Wear Daily)

    Initiative focuses on Latin America

    Mar 02, 2008 04:30 AM
    Chris Jai Centeno
    staff reporter

Joined by stars such as Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Shakira and Elton John, former president Bill Clinton told a Toronto fundraising crowd last night of his latest foreign aid efforts in Latin America and the developing world.

The project, part of the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative, will assist local leaders in addressing issues of social, economic and environmental impact through employment and economy.

Clinton started the initiative last June to create sustainable development in Latin American countries where natural resources dominate the economy.

“The world is bedevilled by three great crises: the persistent and growing inequality in economic opportunity, education and health care; the insecurity caused by our interdependence making us vulnerable to terror, to weapons of mass destruction, to the spread of dangerous materials, to global epidemics; and the unsustainability of our current developmental course because of the threats of global warming,” Clinton told more than 1,000 people at the Westin Harbour Castle Convention Centre.

Tables at the event cost between $25,000 and $300,000.

Vancouver mining financier Frank Giustra has pledged $100 million to the project, plus half of his future earnings from the natural resources sector.

The initiative has raised more than $300 million so far. (Source: The Star)

Apparently, he really does have a need for speed. Tom Cruise and his son, Connor, swapped the glitz and glamour of the Oscars for the grit and grunge of NASCAR’s Auto Club 500 in Fontana, California.

Wisely avoiding any Days of Thunder-style spinouts, Tom and Connor (seen above with NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick) chucked a football around with crew members in Jimmie Johnson’s pit box.

By WENN world entertainment news - Monday, February 25 08:45 am

George Clooney, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Cameron Diaz, Harrison Ford and Jennifer Aniston were among the Hollywood superstars who helped turned the sixth annual Night Before fundraiser into a GBP3 million affair on Saturday.

Past Oscar winners and nominees for this year’s Academy Awards joined the stars at the Motion Picture + Television Fund bash, which was held at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The GBP3 million raised at this year’s pre-Oscars party brings the total amount of money raised since the event’s inception in 2003 to an impressive GBP15.5 million.

Motion Picture + Television Fund chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg feels this year’s event was so star-studded because the recent Hollywood writers strike really helped movie celebrities see how their colleagues need financial help.

Katzenberg says, “Many people in our industry have faced great challenges the past few months and the support and services provided by MPTF were critical to their being able to support themselves and their families.” (Source: Yahoo! New UK & Ireland)

Tom Cruise is planning a “romantic” Valentine’s Day for wife Katie Holmes.

The actor is known for his passionate gestures - including proposing to former Dawson’s Creek star Katie on the top of Paris’ Eiffel Tower - and says this Valentine’s Day will be no different.

He said: “I have plans, and it will definitely be romantic. I’m going to keep the details to myself but it’s going to be fun though!”

Katie, who accompanied Tom to the opening of Los Angeles’ Eli Broad Contemporary Art Museum on Saturday, also spoke about the couple’s 21-month-old daughter Suri.

She said: “Every day she does something new. She’s growing up so quickly!”

Tom recently revealed he will never be disillusioned by love, and hopes to always be a romantic at heart.

He said: “I will never be down with love. Ever. I’m the guy who loves relationships. I love women. I’m very much a romantic and an optimist.”

By Michelle Nichols Thu Feb 7, 9:46 AM ET

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Pop star Madonna hosted a celebrity-studded event on Wednesday on the lawns of the United Nations to aid Malawi orphans, the U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and — controversially — to inaugurate a new Gucci store.

Actors Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, Drew Barrymore, Gwyneth Paltrow and a heavily pregnant Jennifer Lopez were among many stars at the dinner that Gucci Chief Executive Mark Lee said has already raised $3.7 million.

But critics have objected to the use of the U.N. grounds to kick off a Gucci store opening and raised concerns about ties between Madonna’s charity Raising Malawi and The Kabbalah Centre, a body devoted to a mystical form of Judaism followed by the pop star.

The accusations, made mainly by bloggers, appear to stem from the fact that Raising Malawi’s founder Michael Berg is also co-director of The Kabbalah Centre.

“I don’t really pay any attention to that. I am grateful that Gucci has underwritten this event — that’s all that matters to me — their generosity. There’s always controversy surrounding anything that involves change,” Madonna told Reuters.

“I want to put Raising Malawi on the map. I want credibility as a philanthropic organization. I want to inspire people. I don’t want them to just write me a check: I want them to give me a piece of their heart,” she said.

Philippe van den Bossche, executive director of Raising Malawi, said it was “absolutely not true” that any money raised would benefit Kabbalah. He said the organization was a nonprofit, registered, nonsectarian organization intended to provide support for orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi.

    GUCCI OPENING “A COINCIDENCE”

A huge tent was erected on the lawns of the United Nations for the event and security was tight. Alicia Keys, Timbaland and Rihanna were due to perform, while comedian Chris Rock was to auction off celebrity events, such as aerobics with Madonna and baseball batting practice with Yankee Alex Rodriguez.

Despite announcing the fundraising event in November as a celebration of the opening of a new Gucci store in New York, Lee said on Wednesday that “it’s a coincidence that we happen to be here and we’re opening an important store on Friday.”

“Really tonight is about the charities and the money we’re raising,” he told Reuters, while Gucci’s Creative Director Frida Giannini said that in the end the dinner was simply a “fundraising event with glamour.”

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who did not attend the event, said on Tuesday that he understood the proceeds would “be used for a proper purpose as agreed between UNICEF and the organizers.”

Gucci, which is owned by French retailer PPR, has paid for the entire event and said all money raised will be split between Raising Malawi and UNICEF.

Madonna’s interest in helping Malawi orphans is personal — she and her husband, director Guy Ritchie, are raising a young Malawian boy they hope to adopt. But the adoption has hit several stumbling blocks since they took him from an orphanage in late 2006 when he was 13 months old.

Rights groups have accused Madonna of using her fame and wealth to circumvent the country’s adoption rules, although the singer has insisted she is following the law. Malawi’s High Court is to hold a hearing this year into whether Madonna and Ritchie are suitable parents and should adopt the child.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — You’re never too big to rehearse. Tom Cruise was among the stars who stopped by the Shrine Auditorium Saturday to run through lines for Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards — the only show during Hollywood’s strike-subdued awards season that’s sure to have an A-list turnout.

Clad in a black blazer with a matching turtleneck and jeans, Cruise chewed gum and joked with stagehands as he practiced his lines in front of an audience of stand-ins and seat-saving placards.

His rehearsal was broadcast on monitors throughout the theater as workers prepared it for the 1,200 actors and industry heavyweights expected, along with scores of journalists.

Among the expected guests at the union’s 14th annual awards show are Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Forest Whitaker and Cate Blanchett.

Even the rehearsal list read like a star-studded party, with Chandra Wilson, Vanessa Williams, Viggo Mortensen, Kate Beckinsale and James Marsden among those taking the stage Saturday.

“Hairspray” star Nikki Blonsky’s mom worked a Blackberry as the actress practiced her lines. Wearing a black tunic over matching leggings and her hair in a bun, Blonsky smiled as she looked out at a front-row seat with her name on it. After her five-minute rehearsal, a stage manager gave her the A-OK sign and she rushed away to give an interview.

Outside, a tent in the theater parking lot was transformed into an elegant setting for the awards-show after party. Thousands of white roses filled giant gold vases lining the curtain-draped walls. Half a dozen workers stood atop tall ladders to trim the ceiling with greenery.

In just a few hours, the crates of champagne flutes in the center of the room would be replaced with actors rubbing elbows with their own.
