LOS ANGELES, Calif. (November 2, 2007) – Tom Cruise attended the premiere of “Lions For Lambs,” his first film since joining the newly resurrected United Artists mini-studio as a producer.
Tom spoke with Access Hollywood’s, Tony Potts about working with director Robert Redford.
“I have studied his career, he is, you know… he is a true legend. He is a true vanguard in cinema. So for me, to be able to have the opportunity to work with him, particularly with the scenes with Meryl — as an actor, you go, ‘Oh this is the sweet part of the bat,‘” Tom said.
“Lions For Lambs” is United Artists’ first film release since Tom and Paula Wagner took over the reigns of the legendary studio.
“It’s a nice moment, particularly this kind of picture to start out with. I feel really excited about it,” Tom said.
He found working with his co-stars, Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, to be an exhilarating battle of words on the big screen.
“What starts out as a conversation ends up in a duel. To have that duel, I mean… I remember having a duel with Nicholson in ‘A Few Good Men.‘ With this picture… to have that kind of battle with Meryl is fun. That is the kind of characters you want to play with,” he said.
Tom feels Robert has created a film that will withstand the test of time.
“You look at where we are in society today, and I would be interested to look at this picture 5 years from now. There is really no other director that can deliver it the way that he does,” Tom said of the legendary actor/director.
Tom attended the premiere with his wife, Katie Holmes. Katie is reportedly just days away from running in a marathon.
Tom and Katie’s good friends, Will Smith and David Beckham, also attended the huge premiere.
Will Smith told Access that he and Tom always try to remember the fans.
“There is a connection that we have with people that has to be maintained, that has to be serviced and that has to be reciprocated. A lot of people forget the important of the fans,” said Smith.
“Lions For Lambs” opens on November 9.

Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep and Robert Redford hit the red carpet Thursday night in Hollywood to premiere their new political thriller, ‘Lions for Lambs’ — and ET was there!
Tom was accompanied by his wife Katie Holmes, who was there to show her support. Tom told ET, “Its always better with her…she’s exceptional.”
In theaters Nov. 9, ‘Lions for Lambs’ finds Cruise as a charismatic presidential hopeful whose bombshell story for a probing journalist (Streep) could potentially affect the fates of two California college students who were inspired by their professor, Dr. Stephen Malley (Redford), to fight in Afghanistan.
Directed by Redford, the film also stars Derek Luke and Michael Pena.
Go to ET Online to watch a video clip of all the actors on the red carpet! While you’re there, maybe you’d also like to watch ET’s video clips of Tom talking about his wedding day (in Italy, October 23rd) and about the proposal while being in Paris again (October 25th).
In his first sit-down interview since marrying Katie Holmes and welcoming daughter Suri into the world, Tom Cruise gets candid about marriage and fatherhood with our Jann Carl in Paris, as he promotes his new political drama, ‘Lions for Lambs.’
Cruise, who talks to Jann in the city where he proposed to Katie, says married life is “all very good, all very lovely,” and that when he needs an honest opinion, he definitely turns to his wife of nearly a year.
Tom’s highly anticipated new flick ‘Lions for Lambs’ is out November 9, but he’s not the only working actor in the Cruise household. Katie has wrapped the comedy ‘Mad Money’ with Diane Keaton and Queen Latifah, and Tom sings the praises for his talented lady.
“I feel lucky,” he says. “I have a lot of respect for her as an artist, as a woman. She’s a very strong, gracious woman. She’s very funny, a great comedian.”
Besides working on movies and a happy marriage, Tom and Katie are keeping busy with their one-and-a-half year-old daughter Suri. And he says, just like everyone else, he and Katie make their hectic lives work. “We’ve gotten pretty good at organizing everything,” he says. “I don’t sleep much anyway.”
Tom also talks about his new position as co-owner of United Artists and the possibility of one day directing. “I will one day, I’ve always wanted to,” he says. “I’ve been offered things to direct, but have to find the right piece.”

LONDON (Reuters) – Film star Tom Cruise spent more than two hours signing autographs and greeting fans in London on Monday at the world premiere of his new movie “Lions for Lambs,” Hollywood’s latest examination of U.S. foreign policy.
“Lions for Lambs,” which follows a slew of films related to the war in Iraq and the U.S. military response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, is about two soldiers serving in Afghanistan and political intrigue back in the United States.
Directed by Robert Redford and also starring Meryl Streep, the film has been branded “anti-war” by some media, and its backers are hoping its controversial subject matter will boost it at the box office and going into the awards season.
“I think that films like this are interesting and important and I think it’s anyone’s place if they want to do it,” Cruise told Reuters on the red carpet ahead of the premiere at the London Film Festival.
“We are free to communicate about anything we want and any subject we want, so I think it’s absolutely correct.”
Asked if he studied any politician in particular for his role as an ambitious senator, 45-year-old Cruise said:
“I studied many. I’ll never tell exactly who, but there’s many months of research that went into this character to not make him into a caricature but into a human being with real problems and to reflect that idea.”
Streep, who plays a journalist in “Lions for Lambs,” was not at the premiere, while Redford avoided the media glare and slipped into the cinema via the back entrance.
The film is due to open in U.S. cinemas on November 9. (Source: Yahoo! News)
Tom Cruise stunned hundreds of suburbanites outside the Picture House Theater in Pelham, N.Y. last night when he emerged from a screening and met with fans.
The world’s biggest movie star got up close and personal after a screening of his new wartime drama, “Lions for Lambs,” as he signed autographs and posed for countless pictures.
It was a solo night for Tom, though, as wife Katie Holmes stayed away from the screening and instead took a stroll with baby Suri. (Source: Extra)

Britisch Telegraph:
A star-studded world première and a treasure from the archives are among the highlights of this year’s London Film Festival, writes Sheila Johnston
More voluminous than ever, the London Film Festival catalogue and website represent an intimidating read for anyone trying to plan a viewing strategy. The artistic director, Sandra Hebron, has mopped up most of the big films from Cannes and Venice: recommended among these are Eastern Promises (which opens proceedings on Oct 17), The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and I’m Not There. That just leaves dozens of relatively unknown quantities. Here are 10 to watch out for.
Lions for Lambs
Because of its place in the festival calendar, London attracts few major world premières, but this is a 24-carat one: Robert Redford’s contribution to the current wave of films exploring the human consequences of America’s war on terror. Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep and Redford himself play some of the politicians, journalists and intellectuals whose lives are transformed by hostilities in Afghanistan.

Many world famous film stars including Sophia Loren, Sharon Stone and Tom Cruise will light up this year’s second edition of the Rome Cinema Festival, organizers said Thursday.
Among the starts are also Cate Blanchett, Keira Knightley, Halle Berry, Monica Bellucci, Robert Redford and Sean Penn.
Blanchett will be the first to hit the red carpet on Oct. 19 in a reprise of her acclaimed 1998 Elizabeth I portrayal in visionary Indian director Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth: The Golden Age.
Loren will bring the curtain down on Oct. 27 as she receives a career achievement award, Italian News Agency ANSA said on Thursday.
In between, an array of would-be blockbusters and more arty fare from 40 countries will bid to draw at least as many viewers as the half million spectators the inaugural edition attracted.
Rome’s film-buff mayor Walter Veltroni, who achieved his dream of bringing a major movie event to the Italian capital despite sneers from the cinema establishment and controversy over a clash with the Venice festival, said Thursday, “This year is going to be even better”.
There will be 14 films competing for the top Marcus Aurelius prize, including two Italian films – Carlo Mazzacurati’s “la Giusta Distanza” and Emidio Greco’s “L’Uomo Privato”.
Also in contention are two Spanish films – “Barcelona” and “Una Mapa and Caotica Ana”; “Fugitive Pieces from Canada”; China’s “Li Chun”; and an Iranian-Japanese production, “Hafez”.
Among the festival’s special events are a focus on India with new films such as Anurag Kashyap’s “No Smoking” and a look at new socially and environmentally conscious movies from Hollywood such as Penn’s “Into The Wild”.
LONDON (AFP) – Hollywood stars including Tom Cruise, Robert Redford and Meryl Streep are expected to attend the 51st London Film Festival next month, organisers said Thursday.
The trio are due at the world premiere of “Lions For Lambs”, a political thriller directed by Redford and also starring Cruise and Streep which explores the impact of war through entwined plots in Afghanistan and the United States.
The festival — which runs from October 17 to November 1 — will include 184 features and 133 short films from 43 countries around the world. It will also include special strands on new Romanian and French films.
Announcing the line-up, artistic director Sandra Hebron said: “In a very strong year for world cinema, we are delighted to be able to present such a wide-ranging and high quality programme of films and special events”. (Source: Yahoo! News)
Lions For Lambs, the first Tom Cruise vehicle to be released under the actor’s new United Artists banner, has been confirmed as the opening night movie at this year’s Los Angeles international film festival. The film, which premieres on November 1, looks set to spark controversy with its tale of military heroism in Afghanistan and political cowardice in Washington. Lions For Lambs stars Cruise alongside Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. Inevitably a great deal is riding on the project. It is the actor’s first picture since being abruptly dropped by Paramount last year, reportedly over his Scientologist beliefs. (Guardian)
“The Tom Cruise-starrer is not scheduled for any other fall festival.
The American Film Institute announced today that the highly anticipated Tom Cruise drama “Lions for Lambs” will be the opening-night film for AFI Fest 2007.
Directed by Robert Redford, “Lambs” is the first release under the Paula Wagner / Tom Cruise regime at United Artists.
The picture stars Redford, Cruise and Meryl Streep, and is described as a politically charged drama centered around two American soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and a U.S. senator with presidential ambitions (Cruise) who may have a hand in their fates. Streep plays a TV journalist poised to land a major story with the help of the senator. Redford appears as an idealistic college professor who is torn by the choices of two of his former students.
“We think it’s an exciting film and an important film,” Wagner, UA’s chief executive, said in a statement released today by AFI. “And this is the perfect way to introduce it to the public.”
So far, it’s the only festival selection for “Lambs.” The picture is not scheduled to screen at any of the other upcoming fall film festivals, including Venice and Toronto.
Cinema Expo went out with a bang as Tom Cruise made his first trip here for UA’s presentation to Euro exhibs while Universal took the limelight Thursday morning.
Cruise and Paula Wagner came to Amsterdam to introduce international exhibs to what Wagner described as the “newly rejuvenated” United Artists, and tubthump for the first two pics on the slate, “Lions for Lambs” and “Valkyrie.”
UA plans to release four to six films a year. Although the pair revealed no new projects, Wagner told exhibs to save a space for UA’s upcoming slate.
“We are working on a number of other wonderful projects so please set aside some playing time for us,” she said. Both Wagner and Cruise referred to UA’s history and promised to live up to it.
“The goals that we have and the kind of pictures that we are interested in making I hope will represent the great history of what United Artists has stood for,” Cruise said.
Wagner promised the new UA’s slate would be as varied as that of the old UA.
“We want to make a diverse slate of movies from action, thrillers to romantic comedies and everything in between,” she said.
Cruise spoke to delegates at length about helmer Bryan Singer’s “Valkyrie,” which begins principal photography in Germany in mid-July. Cruise plays the leader of a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1944.
However, he made no reference to reports that permit holdups are because of his affiliation to Scientology.
“It is a picture that when I was reading it, my hands started sweating,” Cruise said. “It was incredibly exciting and compelling.”
The script was written by Christopher McQuarrie (“The Usual Suspects”) and newcomer Nathan Alexander. Cruise’s high praise for popular Dutch thesp Carice van Houten (“Black Book”), with whom he co-stars in “Valkyrie,” drew whoops of approval from local industryites.
Cruise envisages the pic will be in theaters in “one and a half years.”
The UA presentation closed with the first public screening of footage from “Lions for Lambs,” which is released worldwide on Nov. 9. Attendees were treated to 5½ minutes of footage from the Robert Redford helmed pic about the war on terror, which Wagner described as “a powerful and emotional story about courage, sacrifice and the human consequences of a complicated war that has divided our world.”
Cruise paid tribute to Redford. “He is a cinema icon and a legend and he has really changed cinema, the way pictures are looked at and released.”

Expo organizers report that attendance for this edition is up 10% on the 1,250 delegates who registered in 2006. (Variety).
Dutch entertainment program RTL Boulevard has a video of Tom at the Expo, click here to watch it! (The presenter of the show introduces the video clip by saying Tom’s here to promote his new movie Lions for Lambs but all the presenter wanted to know if Tom knows Carice van Houten and if he had met her).
On their site a summary of his visit, (translated):
Tom Cruise hasn’t let his Dutch fans down today. The 44-year old superstar arrived with three black limousines at the Amsterdam RAI, where he held a speech for its fifteenth edition of the Cinema Expo International, Europe’s greatest gathering of the film- and theatre industry.
More than one hundred admirers of the actor came to the congress centre to catch a glimpse of their idol. Cruise, who ignored the mass of gathered press, really appreciated that and spend more than half an hour signing autograph after autograph and let his fans take pictures of them. Dressed in a slim, black tuxedo, shiny leather shoes and dark sunglasses he looked like a true megastar.
Not until a reporter handed him some wooden clogs for his wife Katie Holmes and their daughter Suri, Cruise paid some attention to the journalists. He was eager to accept the wooden shoes. To the question how Suri is doing he answered she’s great.
He didn’t meet Carice van Houten, who will play Cruise’s wife in the movie ‘Valkyrie’, yet, he told reporters. But he did see her work and named her a great actress. He also said he was sorry not to have visited The Netherlands before, since it’s such a great country.
At the expo, where important productions like ‘Evan Almighty’ and ‘Surf’s up’ are presented, Cruise speaks about his new movie ‘Lions for lambs’, which is directed by Robert Redford. Next to Cruise and Redford there’s a part for Meryl Streep in the movie, which will be in Dutch theatres this November.
“Cruise, who spent last week in the French Riviera with Holmes and daughter Suri, 1, was in the Dutch capital promoting his drama Lions for Lambs on the final day of Europe’s Cinema Expo movie-distributors’ convention.
Accompanied by his producing partner Paula Wagner, Cruise showed a five-minute clip of the movie, in which he plays a congressman opposite Meryl Streep and Robert Redford.
The actor, wearing a black suit and sunglasses, spent only a few hours in Amsterdam, spending almost an hour signing autographs, taking pictures and joking with fans – even signing one admirer’s forehead.
He laughed when local reporters gave him three pairs of traditional Dutch wooden clogs – two adult-size pairs and one tiny set. “Are the others for Katie and Suri? Thank you!” he said. Cruise said he couldn’t figure out why he hadn’t been to Amsterdam before, adding: “It’s beautiful.” “
Tom comes to Holland!
Tom will pay a quick visit to the Cinema Expo International at the ‘RAI’ in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) to promote his latest movie ‘Lions for Lambs”, as confirmed this Tuesday by the organisation of the expo.
Cinema Expo International, held from June 25th untill 28th, is the only international convention and trade show dedicated to the European cinema exhibition and distribution community.
‘Lions for lambs’ is a drama, directed by Robert Redford, and takes place partly in Afghanistan. Tom plays an American congres man. The movie will be in Dutch theaters in November. (RTL Boulevard)
Cruise bears ‘Lions’ at Cinema Expo
Tom Cruise may have been shunned by the German government this week, but he is welcome in Holland.
Cruise and partner Paula Wagner will make an unannounced stop at the European exhibitors confab Cinema Expo to unveil a first look at fare from the new United Artists: a 5½-minute clip of Robert Redford’s “Lions for Lambs,” the company’s first release.
The duo also will tubthump “Valkyrie,” the WWII thriller that the German Defense Ministry has prohibited from shooting at military sites in the country due to the actor’s ties to the Church of Scientology.
The Cinema Expo stop will be Cruise’s first at the event, which is in its 16th year.
Dennis Rice, UA president of worldwide marketing and publicity, is convinced the controversy won’t derail UA’s European launch. “It hasn’t affected our focus at all. We are excited about ‘Lions for Lambs’ and ‘Valkyrie.’ ”
Rice added, “Cinema Expo is a great place to launch United Artists to the European marketplace. We recognize that this is increasingly a worldwide business, and Cinema Expo is as important, if not more important, than the other tradeshows.”
Last year, 1,250 people attended. No figures are available yet for this year. (Variety)
