Some rumours are going around that Tom Cruise will be working on Paper Wings, which is currently eyeing Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones) as director. It’s rumoured that Tom will be working on the script developement, and possibly starring. Here is the full story from Variety.com:

EXCLUSIVE: Brian Kirk, the “Game of Thrones” helmer who’s in talks to direct “Thor 2,” is also in negotiations to take the reins of Sony’s rodeo pic “Paper Wings,” which is being developed as a potential starring vehicle for Tom Cruise.

Overbrook Entertainment and Temple Hill Entertainment are teaming to produce the Les Bohem-scripted pic, which follows a rodeo champ who falls for an up-and-coming country singer.

Prior to Kirk’s attachment, there hadn’t been any movement on the long-gestating project since last summer, when Cruise, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith performed a table read at the Saddle Ranch Chop House in Hollywood.

While there are no actors officially attached, sources tell Variety that Cruise had a hand in selecting Kirk for the gig and will work with the helmer to develop the script.

Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey are producing for Temple Hill, while Overbrook’s principals include Will Smith, James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith and Ken Stovitz, who is running point on the project.

Bohem and Bowen developed the romance story after meeting at the 2005 Nashville Screenwriters Conference. Charles Stone was previously attached to direct “Paper Wings” when it was set up at New Line back in 2006.

Kirk will make his studio debut with Marvel’s “Thor 2,” which Disney will release on July 26, 2013. Irish filmmaker has directed episodes of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” Showtime’s “Dexter” and BBC’s “Luther,” as well as episodes of HBO’s upcoming series “Luck” and BBC’s three-part adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel “Great Expectations.”

CAA reps Cruise and Kirk, who’s also repped by Independent Talent Group.

Holiday schedule shuffle also sees Fox Searchlight’s “The Descendants” moved to a Thanksgiving-friendly date.

    Let the holiday games begin.

Studios have begun tweaking their year-end schedules, led by Paramount pushing back the release of Tom Cruise starrer Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol by five days, from Dec. 16 to Dec. 21.

Overseas — where Cruise remains immensely popular — Ghost Protocol still opens in Asia, Russia and two-thirds of Europe, including France and Germany, on Dec. 16.

Hours after Paramount revealed the switch-up, Fox Searchlight said it will now open Alexander Payne’s George Clooney starrer The Descendants in a limited run on Nov. 23, instead of December 16.

Summary: The IMF is shut down when it’s implicated in a global terrorist bombing plot. Ghost Protocol is initiated and Ethan Hunt and his rogue new team must go undercover to clear their organization’s name. No help, no contact, off the grid. You have never seen a mission grittier and more intense than this.

Directed by Brad Bird, best-known for his work on films such as The Incredibles, the movie stars Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Josh Holloway and a large cast of other well-known actors.

DEADLINE EXCLUSIVE: Rosamund Pike is negotiating for the female lead opposite Tom Cruise in One Shot, the Christopher McQuarrie-directed adaptation of the bestselling Lee Child novel series for Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions. Pike was among a small group of actresses vying for the role. The British actress played Andromeda in Clash of the Titans 2, and she recently wrapped the David Frankel-directed The Big Year opposite Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Steve Martin, and the Rowan Atkinson comedy Johnny English Reborn.

Cruise is playing Jack Reacher, the retired military policeman who wanders the country with only his passport, bankbook, toothbrush and the clothes on his back. He finds his way into scrapes, taking the side of the underdog. In One Shot, Reacher investigates a case in which a lone sniper murders five victims before being captured. Reacher discovers it’s more than a simple open-and-shut case.

Pike will play Helen Rodin, a local defense attorney defending the man arrested for the shootings. She works with Reacher to bring the true culprits to justice. Don Granger and Cruise will produce through Mutual Film Company and C/W Productions. Skydance’s David Ellison and Dana Goldberg are producing as is Gary Levinsohn and Paula Wagner, and Ken Kamins is exec producer. UTA reps Pike with Shelly Browning and UK-based Dallas Smith.

Tom Cruise may find his latest leading lady this weekend.

Cruise is gearing up to make One Shot, a Paramount-Skydance adaptation of a 2005 Lee Child crime thriller. Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote Cruise’s Valkyrie movie, penned the script and is directing

On Saturday, McQuarrie and the studio were reading at least three actresses for the female lead: Hayley Atwell, Alexa Davalos and Rosamund Pike.

Atwell is best known to US audiences as the female lead opposite Chris Evans in Captain America.

Davalos last appeared in Clash of the Titans as Andromeda and counts Defiance, The Mist and The Chronicles of Riddick amongst her credits.

Pike drew acclaim for her work in the British movie Made in Dagenham and Barney’s Version. She also appeared with Carey Mulligan in An Education. One Shot centers on a Jack Reacher, an ex-Army cop who gets sucked into the mystery surrounding the arrest of a sniperaccused of killing five random people in a shooting. The female role is that of tough lawyer and daughter of the discrict attorney.

The studio is said to be seeking a pedigreed yet non-A-list actress for the movie. Brit Marling was an early favorite but sources say her schedule didn’t work

The studio is eyeing a fall shoot in Pittsburgh. Paramount had no comment.

Actor Tom Cruise has signed on for the lead role in Universal Pictures’ graphic novel adaptation Oblivion for Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski. We reported last month that Tom Cruise was the front runner for the part, and now his deal is finalized.

Tom Cruise will star as one of the only humans left on Earth, a soldier who repairs the drones which roam the planet and destroy alien beings. The rest of human civilization now lives above the clouds, since the planet has become too toxic. When this soldier finds a woman who crash landed on Earth, they go on a unique journey together, discovering that what they have been told about Earth may not be true.

Joseph Kosinski will direct from a screenplay by Karl Gajdusek, who polished the original script by William Monahan. Production is scheduled to begin in October, with a $100 million budget. It is also said that Oblivion will be eyed for a PG-13 rating.

Oblivion is in development and stars Tom Cruise. The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski.

Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz starrer off to good start

    By ANDREW STEWART

wentieth Century Fox’s action caper “Knight and Day” scored an estimated $3.8 million Wednesday at 3,043 locations, repping a solid jump start for the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz starrer.

Fox said it hopes word of mouth, coupled with last weekend’s sneaks, will translate through the weekend among older auds. Wednesday’s figures rep a considerable start for “Knight” given that the film’s targeted adult demo typically shy away from mid-week screenings.

Still, comparable adult summer titles released on Wednesday, including last year’s R-rated Universal pic “Public Enemies,” earned $8.2 million opening day. Paramount-DreamWorks’ “Tropic Thunder,” in which Cruise appeared in a cameo role, debuted with $6.5 million in August 2008. Opening three-day totals for “Public Enemies” reached a muted $25.3 million, while “Tropic Thunder” grossed $25.8 million during its inaugural frame.

Overseas prospects for “Knight” look promising as Cruise usually draws top coin in some major markets. Pic launched day and date with the U.S. in 12 markets, including Russia and South Korea.

“Knight” will expand to some 50 more Stateside engagements Friday when it will compete for adult auds with Sony’s wide release “Grown Ups,” which launches at 3,533.

    Knight & Day Stills

REUNITING Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz on the big screen, 20th Century Fox’s summer blockbuster Knight and Day now hits cinemas in the UK on July 14, it’s been officially announced.

According to the official synopsis, Roy Milner (Cruise) is a secret agent who goes on a blind date with unlucky-in-love June Havens (Diaz), and ends up pulling her into a journey to protect a powerful battery that holds the key to an infinite power source.

During their glamorous, globetrotting and sometimes deadly adventure, nothing and no one – even the now fugitive couple – are what they seem.

Amid shifting alliances and unexpected betrayals, they race across the world with their survival ultimately hinging on the battle of truth versus trust.

Also in the action-comedy, directed by James Mangold ((3:10 to Yuma, Walk the Line, Girl, Interrupted) are Peter Sarsgaard, Maggie Grace, Paul Dano, Marc Blucas, Viola Davis and Jordi Mollà.

Knight and Day was shot across the world in locations including Massachusetts, Spain, Austria and Jamaica.

The certificate and running time are to be confirmed. The film was previously set for release on July 2.
