Hey guys, I got this e-mail from Claudio Meli from Italy.
The issue is that the actor who does the voice dubbing in Italy was changed. Italian fans got used to the old voice, and I understand that watching a dubbed movie with a voice that you got used to hear from another actor is really really confusing and annoying.
They’ve made an open letter that should be fowarded to Tom. But, I think I will repeat myself now, this site and myself have no conection with Tom himself or anyone from his team. Chantal and I are your regular fans who love doing the site
. Anyway, click the link below to read the full letter. Paramount, if you do read this, click the link! The letter is addressed to Tom, but I believe its the studio that does the decisions:
Hi Tom,
We’re great fan of yours, from Italy, Claudio, Pierpaolo and Emanuele. We love M:I series !!!!!!!!!!
Anyway…We’re writing this for all fans of yours from Italy, ’cause we adore you as a great artist and especially as a man.
We grew up with your movies, loving the fantastic charachters you played since the beginning…
From Top Gun to Collateral we heard an extraordinary dubbing (except for Eyes Wide Shut due to a precise reason) and from that far moment we associated your strong and unique work with the passionate voice of Roberto Chevalier, that always has done great work mantaining the great level of pathos of your original performance.
Unfortunately, UIP responsible for the dubbing Claudia Gwirtzman fired up Mr. Chevalier, that represented for years (and for us will always represent) your voice.
Riccardo Rossi, your italian voice for War of The Worlds, has surely done a great job, but for us was like hearing a friend drastically talking with a surreal voice, not usual for him… For italian audience in that great movie you talk with Johnny Depp’s voice!!! It’s like if we can’t reach anymore those emotional feelings and vibrations from your interpretation that only rests in the original version of the movie, so that we always have to wait until the dvd release for watching it in English with your stunning original performance…
In Italy War of The Worlds has gone well at box office but people came out from theaters a little disappointed by hearing “their friend” Tom talking with an unusual voice.
The question is: why change something that’s so good?
Firing up Chevalier, talking as a lover of your artistic work and for loving cinema, is a terrible mistake!
This could break the feeling reached with the audience…
Just listen to his last italian dubbing for Collateral or The Last Samurai: amazing and unique…so much charme in it!
We also heard about people wanting to set up a petition for giving your voice back… It’s simple: We can’t imagine, and so do a lot of people, being sitting in a theatre here in italy for watching the long-waited M:I-3 and hearing a different voice for my beloved Ethan Hunt than the one he had in past episodes. Mr.Chevalier, all along this years is the one who connected us to you To, by hand, so that we have enjoyed all those great moments of your career.
A voice helps us dreaming: changing it, they prohibit us to do it in the same way. Not only. A voice is strictly in legacy with a person for a lifetime. Only hearing someone that we know very well with a different voice will taste inexplicable.
We and fan from our website personally protested for this decision early before the release of War Of The Worlds…we wrote mails to newspaper, cinema , movie reviews, cinema sites… they published our reasons but they also answered that the decision was taken by Mr.Cruise in person.
We don’t believe this and we think that UIP wants to bury this thing.
That’s the reason of this letter… We ask you, dear Tom, we need your help… We would only want to keep dreaming watching and living your movies, admiring your performance through that great voice and loving your charachters as we always done!
Thanks for your attention and for each emotion you give us and good luck for what comes next!
We love what you do and how you do it.
Hoping to hearing from you soon…
Claudio Meli from Palermo, Emanuele Valla from Parma, Pierpaolo Festa from Palermo, MovieMagic WebSite and all your italian fans.
We also created an on-line petition for bringing back your mithic and historical voice: http://www.multiplayer.it/articolo.php?id=20513#

I have always loved Tom’s work and admire him. Iam disabled and think he was brave to do Fourth of July. I am dying to write to him. Please send me his address.
