Tom and Penelope break up!

It’s official: Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz have ended their three-year relationship.

After keeping it hidden for months, Cruise uncovered his sudden split and Access Hollywood knew where he spent Thursday night moments after the announcement.

With the breakup news fresh, Tom managed a smile as he stopped to sign autographs at 1:30 a.m. in the morning outside the Spice Market restaurant in lower Manhattan.

News of the split hit the talk show circuit Friday, surprising Regis Philbin and his special guest host Jay Leno.

“They broke up. Is that right? They got along so good. I’m sorry to hear that. They’re a cute couple. You know when you have the same name it makes it easier,” Leno joked to Regis.

“I’m sorry to hear that. But what can you say about that. They’ll be other loves for the both of them, I’m sure,” said Regis.

Just before the split, Tom flew solo to this year’s Golden Globe awards.

When asked where Penelope was, Tom told Access Hollywood’s Pat O’Brien: “Unfortunately, Penelope had to fly back to Madrid because her father isn’t feeling well.”

People Magazine broke the story of the breakup and Tom’s sister, and new publicist, Lee Anne Devette told us this morning they “broke up at the end of January and it’s amicable. They are incredibly close friends. They care a great deal for each other, they are just not dating anymore.”

Penelope’s spokesperson, Robert Garlock, told Access “they remain good friends and still talk often,” emphasizing “there is no other person involved.”

People Magazine’s Larry Hackett also adds that Tom’s practice of scientology was not a factor in the breakup.

“This is not a religious schism of any kind. They were just two people who were busy. The relationship wasn’t going anywhere,” said Hackett. “Their futures looked the same and I guess they decided it was time to part company.”

The couple, who met on the set of “Vanilla Sky,” while Tom was still married to Nicole Kidman, went public with a photo outside Spago in July 2001. Since then they were a red carpet staple but it started to change late last year.

However, at the couple’s last public appearance in January at “The Last Samurai” premiere in London, Tom said the long-distance factor wasn’t a problem.

“We’re not away from each other that much. There’s moments, a couple weeks here and there,” revealed Tom. “But I have kids and a family… There’s a telephone, fax and it’s really wonderful, actually

  I cannot believe the replies other than to be sorry for them. It’s always sad when any relationship falls apart, because you start one because you have feelings for one another and want to make things work and build a loving family. Everyone needs somebody. When you think you have found that one it’s very very sad when that falls apart. So be sorry for them and leave crappy comments behind. Use your head and your heart and imagine how you would feel if you were in that situation; that you love somebody and it doesn’t work! It only makes you sad.

  Chantal, thanks for the kind words. You wrote sympathetically about the split, and that’s what I need to hear. I was a fan of Tom and Nicole, and was sad when they broke up. Then I was glad when he found Penelope. Now I’m sad again to see Tom and Pene are separated. A broken relationship always hurts on both sides, so my heart goes for Tom and Pene. Tom is just a human being like the rest of us, searching for a soul mate. Will he eventually find one? I hope so. Whatever happens to Tom, he is always my favorite movie star because I like him as an actor and whoever he is as a person.

  Sri, I totally agree with you.
  And Lisa: It’s silly to judge a person you don’t know. Of course it’s your right to have a certain feeling about somebody, but you cannot say that you personally know Penelope. And by stating what you did, you are also judging Tom’s capacity and wisdom to find a partner. When you see his actions you see that he isn’t the kind of man that is hopping from one woman to another. He is always very committed in his relationships (even professional ones) and only begins another one when the ‘old’ one is really over. He didn’t even start his relationship with Pen before the divorce papers were filed. And no matter what the reasons for the divorce were, he’s an honorable man for that guide lines he holds himself to!
  And did you consider the fact that Tom did not bring the split out in the open in January – which could have influenced the Golden Globes in his favor – AND rushed to Morocco to support Penelope – even after the breakup?! Don’t you see all that are very honourable things which shows he has respect and a wise mind. I think someone like that is old and wise enough to pick a partner, so when he started a relationship with Penelope that also says a lot about her. Because Tom keeps high standards. Building a life with Pen shows she has also a high moral and is a respectable woman.
  So there’s no need and no ground for bad mouthing Penelope. You don’t know her, Tom does!
  The fact that they broke up doesn’t mean she’s a bad person, it only means they are not the ones for each other.

  P.S.: Everybody who believes Penelope was shacking every guy she ever worked with is a believer of gossip mags. And when you believe the gossip mags you also believe Tom is a homosexual and his marriage to Nicole was a sham and… you believe a lot more that isn’t true.
  Use your head and think before you judge someone. It says more about yourself then it does about the one you judge.

  I really think the ones who hurt the most are his children. How sad they must be to see their father with someone new and then not? I sincerely hope that he thinks about them before involving himself again and then it not working out:) Their happiness is important too.
