Tom Cruise takes a risky flight with World War II-era ‘Valkyrie’

December 1st, 2008 by Mina | Posted in General | 1 Comment »

BURBANK, Calif. — Tom Cruise’s toys are all over the place.
There are the 16 motorcycles sprinkled about his private hangar at the Burbank airport: an antique Norton, a vintage Harley, an Indian built by Steve McQueen. There are a couple of roadsters, including a 1958 two-seater Corvette (a gift from his wife, Katie Holmes).

And there are his favorites: five airplanes, from an aerobatic biplane to a 1933 crop duster to his prize, a P-51 World War II fighter that once belonged to the Tuskegee Airmen.

The vehicles are all sizes, ages, value. But they share this: handled carelessly, these fast machines would spell the end of the star.

Fitting, then, that he has met director Bryan Singer here to discuss one of the riskiest roles of Cruise’s career: a Nazi soldier plotting the assassination of Hitler in the war thriller Valkyrie, which opens Christmas Day.
Cruise has long been fascinated with World War II and has been searching for a picture from the genre, even though it has been a tough sell since 1998’s Saving Private Ryan.

“You have to take chances, challenge yourself,” Cruise says, patting the propeller of the P-51, which is emblazoned with “Kiss Me Kate” on the nose. “You can’t take movies because you think they’re going to be huge hits.”

But even for a man who has lived much of the past 25 years in front of lenses, the scrutiny of Valkyrie has taken him aback.

First came reports that Cruise and Singer were banned from filming in Germany because of Cruise’s Scientology faith, an account both deny. Singer says he shot in every locale he requested.

Then came the film’s shifting release dates. Initially it was set to come out in summer. Then next spring. Now the holidays.

Finally, and most surprising to director and actor, reviews from people who haven’t seen the film. Last week, an MSNBC blogger quoted anonymous sources who claimed to have seen Valkyrie. They chided Cruise’s portrayal of Claus von Stauffenberg, which includes sporting an eye patch and giving the “Heil Hitler” salute, as “laughable.”

“That’s a first,” Singer says. “This isn’t politics. It’s a film. You’d think people would wait to see it before reviewing and judging it.”

Cruise nods. He’s no stranger to tabloid headlines, Internet send-ups or even being pranked on the red carpet. But he’s puzzled by the attack.

“Do I wish this weren’t happening? Absolutely,” he says. “Some people just feel the need to tear down, and there’s nothing you can do about that.”

I have a blessed life: Tom Cruise

November 25th, 2008 by Mina | Posted in General | No Comments »

Superstar Tom Cruise, who is making a comeback with new thriller ‘Valkryie’ where he plays a German hero Colonel Claus, admits that he has made mistakes.

Cruise in a Nazi uniform and eye-patch plays Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg in the USD 50 million film, which tells the story about the colonel joining forces with some German forces to overthrow the Nazis and end Hilter’s reign.

The star admitted that he could have handled situations like the infamous Oprah Winfrey’s show, where he jumped up and down on the couch crying “I’m in love”, better. “There are things that I could have done better. I could have handled things better,” the actor confessed in an interview to Mirror.

“I was surprised at the criticism but it brought everyone closer together: Katie’s entire family and my family. “Going through that stuff is not pleasant and I think it hit an extreme, but Kate’s a very sure, confident and strong woman. She gets it,” Cruise says.

The actor who is married to Katie Holmes and has a daughter Suri with her says he is back in control. “As a father and a husband you want to protect your family and tell them not to worry because it is all going to be OK.

You just learn from it and move on and I know that. “I have a blessed life because I have a happy family and children that I adore and everyone knows how I feel about Kate. It just brought us even closer together.”

DETAILS MAGAZINE UNVEILS POWER 40 LIST The DETAILS Power Issue Ranks the 40 Most Influential Men on the Planet NEW YORK (November 25, 2008)— DETAILS magazine’s December issue unveils the DETAILS Power 40 list, ranking the 40 most influential men in the world. These power players—all under the age of 47, not all of them liked—are the ones leading us through this unprecedented time of transformation, and they’re not just the usual suspects.

Tom is #7 on this list, here are some excerpts from the story:

7. TOM CRUISE Leading Man (Age: 46) By Alex Bhattacharji “Listen, I have Suri right here, who’s falling asleep,” Tom Cruise says sotto voce. He wants you to know that he’s not speaking softly to sound intense. Suri murmurs. Something about scissors. “What? You don’t want to get your hair cut?” Cruise is apologetic—he asks, “Do you have kids?” The most powerful star in the world really doesn’t want you to think his cherubic daughter’s feelings about bangs rule his life.

The most quintessentially all-American movie star since John Wayne is donning an eye patch and a prosthetic forearm stump and daring you to root for him in a Nazi uniform. Hell yes, he’s got a motive and you can read as much into it as you want: He intends to make you rethink some fundamental assumptions, like who’s good and who’s evil. “When you make people reconsider something that they’re so certain of … I found it very compelling. It’s the reason I’m doing it,” Cruise says. “When I was a kid, we’d play war, you know, and it was always ‘Kill the Nazis.’ I wanted to kill Hitler.” Cruise laughs. In his new movie, Valkyrie, he plays Claus von Stauffenberg, an aristocratic Bavarian army officer who joins the German resistance and leads an attempt to assassinate the führer and wrest Germany from Nazi Party control. The historical thriller, due out the day after Christmas, was directed by Bryan Singer.

In spite of or perhaps because of his recent self-imposed sabbatical, the Tom Cruise of 2008 is able to operate above the entertainment industry. He’s MI-free—liberated from having to save the day, get the girl, or be Tom Cruise. If he wants to decry political apathy about the war in Afghanistan (and play alongside Meryl Streep and Robert Redford), he can slip into the role of an oily, scheming senator in Lions for Lambs. If he’s in the mood to mock Hollywood, he can take an unbilled cameo as a balding, ball-busting studio exec in Tropic Thunder. “When I was working with Ben Stiller, I said, ‘I want to play this character, but I’ve got to dance,’” says Cruise. “I haven’t danced that much since Risky Business!” And if he wants to make you see the good in something that the whole world views as monolithically evil (Nazi Germany), well, he can do that, too. Do you really doubt he can pull it off? To get Valkyrie made, he had to win over a country that was trying outlaw his religion (…) and refused to let him shoot at the army’s historic Berlin headquarters, the Benderblock. … but the star prevailed. “That was always just a small group,” he says of his German critics. “When there was finally dialogue between us and they realized what it was we were doing with the story, they relented. This was a hard movie to make on many levels—but that was just one challenge.”

He clearly felt a connection to Stauffenberg, his crisis of conscience and his conflicting loyalties. “Certain decisions at points in my life … I absolutely related,” he says. “Stauffenberg went from saying, ‘Someone should shoot that bastard’ to realizing, I’m the only one who can do it. You can’t really know until you’re under that kind of pressure. I’m not saying this in some chest-pounding way, but I do feel I’d have that kind of courage.”

No one would or could script this but Tom Cruise. “It’s about doing the right thing,” he says, “but also about finding out what the right thing is. You know what I mean? I do feel that this movie was the right thing to do … I love movies. Yeah, man, I love movies!”

“Look—she’s out,” he says, back in his whispered voice. “Asleep.” And then he excuses himself to return to his 2-year-old daughter—perhaps the one person who sees him as anything but the most powerful star on the planet.

Tom Cruise tells ET: Suri is a girlie girl!

November 25th, 2008 by Chantal | Posted in Movie News, Valkyrie | No Comments »

Tom Cruise’s highly anticipated suspense thriller ‘Valkyrie’ finally arrives in theaters December 26, and ET’s own Mary Hart is with Tom, director Bryan Singer and co-stars Carice van Houten and Thomas Kretschmann to get their take on the true story and “what if” scenario that could have changed the course of World War II!

In ‘Valkyrie,’ Tom plays Col. Claus Graf von Stauffenberg, who helped to hatch a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler at the height of the war in order seize power and put an end to the bloodshed.

“He was a man who thought beyond himself and even his country, looking toward the world,” says Tom. “Very early on he was someone who opposed Hitler.”

The question posed on everyone’s mind at one point or another, adds Tom, is why didn’t anyone just go ahead and just shoot Hitler? Well, it wasn’t that easy, explains Singer.

“You have millions of people in the army: 3,000 generals, German generals in the field; you’ve got fanatical Nazis working all around them, and a government that was about getting rid of him, but also [about] turning the government around,” he says. “['Valkyrie'] was a very ambitious plot, and all the soldiers had taken an oath to [Hitler] personally. It’s very serious.”

Things weren’t always so serious on the set, however, as the cast and crew tried to keep things light despite the dark subject matter — and sometimes the location itself provided the entertainment.

“We had to stop shooting [one day] because there was a wild boar in the neighborhood,” says Tom with a laugh. “That was a new one. I thought I was being ‘Punk’d.’”

In the interview with Mary, Tom also showed off his new shirt designed specifically for him by Katie Holmes for their wedding anniversary, and revealed what daughter Suri thought when she saw her dad on set wearing an eye patch for the movie!

“The make-up girls are smart — they got a teddy bear with a patch,” says Tom. “She got used to that, [but] first when she saw [me with it] she would come up and take the patch off my face.”

Watch ET for more with Tom and ‘Valkyrie’!

Tom Cruise opens up to HELLO! about his two leading ladies

November 25th, 2008 by Chantal | Posted in General | No Comments »

In the week after his two-and-a-half year old daughter Suri was named Hollywood’s most influential tot, dad Tom Cruise proudly speaks to HELLO! magazine in an exclusive interview about happy family life with his adorable little girl and wife Katie Holmes.

“Suri’s very much like her mother,” reveals the Valkyrie star, who celebrated his second wedding anniversary with Katie this month. “She’s open and sunny, just like her Mom is, but she’s also very determined.”

“She’s very much a girl, and will not wear trousers, for instance, only dresses,” he adds. “I put a pair of trousers on her and turn and leave the room and straight away the trousers are off and a dress is on instead.”

Katie’s not pregnant, says Tom Cruise

November 24th, 2008 by Mina | Posted in General | No Comments »

Tom Cruise says he definitely wants more kids but denies his wife Katie Holmes is pregnant.

The couple has a two-year-old daughter Suri, and are the primary carers for Cruise’s two adopted teenage children, Connor and Bella, from his marriage to Nicole Kidman.

“We’ve already heard she’s pregnant but it’s not true, but yes, we will have more children,” Cruise told the Australian magazine Grazia.

He said he felt like “a very helpful husband” this time around.

“When Bella was a baby I used to watch every breath she took. I kept her awake more than she kept me awake,” he said.

“My mother had to come in and even teach me how to bathe her. I was more relaxed with Connor, so now I know the drill with crying, gas, diapers or hunger.”

He also spoke of the challenges of protecting children from the relentless attention of the paparazzi.

“I have to say some of those paparazzi shots of my daughter are incredible,” Cruise said.

“As a parent you protect your children, but Suri is a very open and warm child and she’ll just wave to people on the street. She’s such a happy, fun girl.

“It’s certainly different these days with the media, but people have been very good to us.”

Cruise also told how he and Holmes had coped with the negative publicity generated by his infamous couch jumping on the Oprah Winfrey show, when he professed his love for her.

“It did get extreme with us but Kate is a very sure and confident woman and she got through it,” he said.

“It wasn’t pleasant. But I also thought I could have handled a couple of moments better, and in the end it brought our family closer together.”

Tom and Katie Spend Second Anniversary with the Kids

November 19th, 2008 by Mina | Posted in General | 1 Comment »

There weren’t any elaborate plans this year for Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Instead, the couple celebrated their second anniversary a day early at home in Los Angeles.

Cruise, 46, and Holmes spent Monday with daughter Suri, 2, as well as Isabella, 15, and Connor, 13, Cruise’s children from his marriage to Nicole Kidman.

Holmes took off for L.A. after the Sunday matinee of her Broadway show All My Sons. The show is dark on Mondays, and Holmes returned to New York for her regular Tuesday performance.

The two stars married on Nov. 18, 2006, in Italy. Cruise said last year that the wedding “was very beautiful. As big as it was from the outside, it was a very personal experience and something obviously I’ll never forget.”

The Insider: Tom Cruise joins the party at Amazon

November 17th, 2008 by Chantal | Posted in Appearences | No Comments »

Celebrity Tom Cruise made a guest appearance at Amazon.com’s all-hands meeting earlier this month, according to several Twitter tweets, blog posts by employees and photos.

Cruise’s presence at the Nov. 5 event didn’t seem to serve any real purpose, other than entertainment and to mark the 10th anniversary of the movie store.

Employees were also treated to a special screening of “Valkyrie,” a movie starring Cruise that is set to be released in December. (SeattlePI.com)

Cruise lands “Usual Suspects” scribe for projects

November 17th, 2008 by Chantal | Posted in Movie News | No Comments »

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Oscar-winning “Usual Suspects” writer Christopher McQuarrie has signed on for double duty with United Artists, the largely somnolent studio headed by Tom Cruise.

UA has brought in McQuarrie to write and produce two high-profile projects: “The Champions,” an adaptation of an old British TV series; and “The Monster of Florence,” a fact-based story about a series of murders in Italy. Cruise may take one of the lead roles in “Florence.”

McQuarrie’s concrete involvement suggests a new push to accelerate UA’s slate. The studio has a $500 million production fund that requires three UA movies to be released by mid-2010. But the only project greenlit by UA since Cruise and business partner Paula Wagner took control of the MGM division two years ago is Cruise’s World War Two drama “Valkyrie,” due in theaters next month. McQuarrie co-wrote that film.

“The Champions” revolves around a group of government agents who encounter a hidden civilization that grants them superhuman talents. McQuarrie is hashing out the script with Guillermo del Toro, who will also produce the film but is not attached to direct.

“The Monster of Florence” tells the strange-but-true tale of popular author Douglas Preston and Italian journalist Mario Spezi, who began investigating a series of unsolved murders in Italy and wound up implicated in the case. Two years ago, McQuarrie optioned the film rights to the duo’s ensuing best-seller along with “American Beauty” producers Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen.

UA also is developing the children’s literature series “Ranger’s Apprentice,” the first book of which “Crash” director Paul Haggis is adapting with his daughter Alissa into a possible franchise. (Yahoo! News)

Tom & Katie about their friendship with Will & Jada

November 15th, 2008 by Chantal | Posted in General | No Comments »

Katie Holmes knows a thing or two about juggling a movie career, motherhood, and marriage to a superstar. So who does she consider a role model?

“Jada is so strong,” Holmes tells PEOPLE of her friend Jada Pinkett Smith, 37. “She is a rare woman – a phenomenal friend, mother, wife. She inspires me.”

Adds her husband, Tom Cruise: “Jada tells it like it is. She creates art in her life … She’s effortless. She just has such class.”

Pinkett Smith, who once described Holmes, 29, as a tigress who “runs the show” at home, says the two families are close because they “have a real understanding. In what we do and where we are, there aren’t many people you meet who are living on a parallel line … who can understand the pressures.”

Cruise, 46, also admires the way Pinkett Smith attends to her busy career (she’s currently the voice of Gloria the hippo in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, in which her daughter Willow, 8, plays the junior version of the sassy pachyderm) and still makes her husband of nearly 11 years, Will Smith, 40, and their children her No. 1 priority.

“She is an extraordinary woman and an amazing mother,” he says. “She’s constantly wanting to improve herself and her family.” Agrees Holmes: “She’s just a powerhouse.” (People)

Suri Cruise is Hollywood’s top tot

November 13th, 2008 by Chantal | Posted in General | 1 Comment »

Suri Cruise has already cemented her reputation as Tinseltown’s most influential child - despite being only two.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter has appeared in the most press clippings and had the biggest internet presence over the past year, beating out fellow two-year-old Shiloh Jolie-Pitt and three-year-old Matilda Rose Ledger (daughter of the late Heath Ledger) to take the top spot in the list compiled by Forbes.com.

“America’s most recognised cherub, Suri Cruise played the press with intelligence since she was presented to the world on the cover of Vanity Fair,” says Forbes.com’s Lauren Streib.

“The perennially designer-clad progeny of media mongers TomKat is constantly captured travelling the world and shopping with her mum in her very own pair of custom-fitted Christian Louboutins.”
Dina Sansing, entertainment director for US Weekly, says Suri’s top position was due to her likeability.

It’s much more fun to look at cute pictures of Suri than think about how your finances have decreased,” she says.

And Buzz Photo’s Brad Elterman believes her marketability will never diminish. “I think the public will always want to see these kids grow up. It’s insatiable.”

Cruz Beckham, Victoria and David’s three-year-old son, came in sixth place, while Madonna’s adopted three-year-old, David Banda, came in eighth spot, followed by Britney Spears’ and Kevin Federline’s Sean Preston. (Source: thisissurreytoday.co.uk)

Tom Cruise Pays Tribute to His Friend Ben Stiller (And Their Kids Have Playdates!)

November 13th, 2008 by Chantal | Posted in General | No Comments »

Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor’s little girl, Ella, has a friend in Hollywood: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter Suri. Last evening outside of Cipriani 42nd Street, where Mr. Stiller was being honored by the Museum of the Moving Image, Ms. Taylor told us that Ella and Suri have had a couple of playdates. (Now that Ms. Holmes is in town performing in All My Sons, she and Suri have been spotted around New York.)

“And it’s like any other play date,” said Ms. Taylor, who was wearing a long black Carolina Herrera dress. “I mean [Suri's] amazing and [Tom and Katie] are terrific. And when little kids get together you just let them do their thing, there’s no outside elements. Ella likes being the older sister—and we haven’t had many [play-dates] but whoever’s children that they’re playing with, it’s always a great thing to see your kids connecting.”

Inside, Mr. Stiller’s first congratulations actually came via video from Mr. Cruise, who appeared in Mr. Stiller’s Tropic of Thunder wearing a fat suit. Mr. Cruise said he found working with Mr. Stiller to have been “both an inspiration and enlightening.” He also “wanted to tell the room that I am one of, if not your biggest, fans.”

Other presenters besides Mr. Cruise included recent co-stars Jack Black, from Tropic Thunder; Bill Hader and Amy Adams, from Night at the Museum 2; and Robert De Niro from Meet the Fockers. Then: Sean Combs, Will Arnett, Mike Myers, and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.

The presenters soon began roasting Mr. Stiller. Mr. De Niro threw a jab about the volleyball scene from Meet The Parents: “So, Ben comes out and you expect to see a shlubby body and instead he comes out and is totally buff. Ben, being the terrific actor that he is, overcomes this contradiction by having a really tiny dick. And thanks to the tiny bathing suit, it’s apparent to everyone!”

Mr. Black spoke about his “laser vision,” and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog brought the Cruise theme back, unearthing a clip from The Ben Stiller Show of Mr. Stiller doing an impression of what Tom Cruise would look like “on Broadway.”

“He is so successful,” Triumph said, ruminating on the event’s expenses in relationship to the economy. “One little baby fart of your Madagascar money and we could all be home watching Top Chef.”

Mr. Stiller shot back at Triumph during his speech: “I also want to thank whoever got Triumph the Insult Comic Dog—best kind of comedian, the kind that hides behind a podium.” (Source: NY Observer)

Tropic Thunder DVD Review

November 11th, 2008 by Annie | Posted in General | No Comments »

The movie comes out on the 18th, and you can pre-order it on Amazon.com, here is a review (I skipped some parts, check out the source for full review):

Tropic Thunder is a movie that got alot of pre-release buzz. Alot of it was good but some if it was also quite negative over the on screen comments about the mentally disabled. Tropic Thunder was much hyped and although slightly over hyped is definitely star studded and a ton of fun. Without question what makes Tropic Thunder work is the all star cast but even with an all star cast there are some real stand out roles that shine brightly in this film.

(…)

The highlight of this film was the great cast, and a mix of reasonable writing and entertaining story telling. There are two characters who stole the show though.. Kirk Lazurus played by Robert Downey Junior and shock of all shocks the Executive Producer played by Tom Cruise.

It feels quite odd to be commenting positively on Tom Cruise since lately he hasnt exactly done alot of things that impressed me. His portrayal of the crazed and ambitious movie producer was both funny and refreshing. The balding, overweight, and overly harry producer character was so funny it had me in tears. Throw into that mix Robert Downey Junior playing an African American completely straight… in a comedy… and you have a really funny experience. Jack Black and Ben Stiller also deliver a good performance but can not touch the hilarity of Robert Downey Jr and Tom Cruise.

Tropic Thunder is a fun waste of 90 minutes and I think that anyone who can appreciate a great comedy with alot of top notch characters and actors will appreciate it. Its a must rent and a buy for those of you who just cant get enough of top notch comedy.
